You are a dickhead, yes.

Yes. It was funny.

I'm still waiting to a read a Philly Dick story.

Rindis | 80 comments I've read Do Androids..., but no others. It was very good, but hasn't inspired me to go hunting down his other books.

bsc (bsc0) | 6 comments Same here. While I enjoyed it quite a bit, I haven't picked up another Dick book yet.

bsc (bsc0) | 6 comments What would you recommend after Androids...?

message 7: by Carl (new)

Carl | 38 comments I enjoyed "Do Androids...", can't remember if I've read anything else by him. Back in college a professor said that half of his stuff if genius, and the other half trash because he was on speed or something like that and cranking out books in matters of days, can't remember why. But I've been wanted to try more of his work! I'll have to look into some of the other suggestions here.

Simon (friedegg) My favourite is "A Scanner Darkly" but "Ubik" and "Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" are also very good.

message 9: by Paul (new)

Paul I like most of his stuff, particularly short stories such as- 'We can Remember it for you Wholesale' and 'The Minority Report' - yes, they were films later.

Some of the books are pretty good - Do Androids is his best, I think. I read 'Through a Scanner...' but found it quite hard going - that would be the acid and speed I guess.

Valerie (veegood) | 7 comments My brother gave me a heap of PKD stuff a few years back. I read a whole lot one after another (including Minority report and lots of short stories). I can remember very little about individual stories but I do remember thinking that I enjoyed the stories even if he was a little... strange. I will probably re-read them after we move and I get all my books out of storage, so I'l join the discussion then.

Not amoung his best work, by any means, but okay nonetheless.

Mike Cooley (mikecooley) I'm a huge dickhead... just ask my wife.

He is a BIG influence on my Science Fiction writing.
He gets a--rather disturbing--mention in my short story 'Skin of Giants'.

I agree his quality varies, but I really like the ones mentioned here and will add: THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE to the list of must reads.

Tim Miller (himtimcom) | 2 comments I'm a huge fan of all Dick's stuff. I read 'Our Friends from Frolix 8' recently. It was excellent for so many reasons.

Mark Rayner (markarayner) | 8 comments Completely agree about The Man in the High Castle -- one of my favorite books, and one of the most influential "alternate history" novels written!

If you're reading Dick for the first time, my advice is don't start with Valis. (Save that for later.)

Mary (mary048) | 12 comments Definitely have to consider myself a Dick fan. Favorite so far is also The Man in the High Castle. What a great book. Seems I heard someone might be making a movie based on it. Also have read Ubik and Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Do Androids... and a couple of others.

PDK has such an unique perspective on everything he writes about (it may have been the drugs) and I haven't read any of his work that I didn't like. Note to self: Read More Dick.

Mary (mary048) | 12 comments Just a note to others with ereaders, I just went shopping for one of PDK's collections and I found that Goodreads has a free download of Collection One here (hooray for GR):

Pickle | 2 comments My PKD books so far:

Flow My Tears The Policeman Said
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
The Penultimate Truth
The Man in the High Castle
VALIS
The Divine Invasion

SO far i have enjoyed each one apart from The Divine Invasion which i found to be terrible.

I am going to read A Scanner Darkly, Ubik and Minority Report in the coming months.

Ha! I started reading this and thought at 1st it was a poem you wrote :-)

"Flow my tears," the policeman said,
"Do androids dream of electric sheep?"
The penultimate truth...

It would be an interesting, if difficult, game to create poems from book titles.

Chris Kelly (darkcell) | 11 comments I've only read 3 novels of his; Ubik, Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, and The Man in the High Castle, but I am currently reading through his short stories in order (at least in the order that they're printed in the five volumes of collected stories). He's not the greatest writer in terms of style and literary prowess, but his imagination may be greater than any other writer that I've read with the exception of Jorge Luis Borges. I love the short stories; "The Hanging Stranger" "Beyond Lies the Wub" "Second Variety" "The Progeny" are my favorite off the top of my head, but man they are all great!

Bill (kernos) | 117 comments I've only read 2 books by Dick:

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep
Galactic Pot-healer
Our Friends from Frolix 8

Plus a few Disc world books. I must say I have enjoyed Dick, but have never taken the time to read him comprehensively. I also thought Bladerunner more fun than the book.

I would second it as worth reading.
