I am so jealous of people who are reading great Stephen King material for the first time.

When people say "I don't like Stephen King", this is one of the ones I always challenge them to read. How can you not like The Green Mile collection?"

Ditto! King is was tagged the Horror King and has never lived it down. Yes, he writes great horror fiction, but his genres cover many areas. He does like putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations to see how they hold up. As a huge fan, all I can say is: KING ROCKS!

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Not sure if I want to read that Pigeon book. Sounds too annoying and confusing to me. What did you think of it, overall, Almeta?

I agree! The Green Mile has so much depth to it, as do all his books. I took my favorite definition of friendship from his book, It:

"Maybe there aren't any such things as good friends or bad friends - maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you're hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they're always worth being scared for, and hoping for, and living for. Maybe worth dying for too, if that's what has to be. No good friends. No bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with; people who build their houses in your heart.”
― Stephen King, It

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments Ha! It just occurred to me that Stephen King's quote is appropriate to end the Buddy Read challenge with.

message 105: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2362 comments I love Stephen King as a horror writer having been reading his work for as long as I can remember but I was very impressed by the Green Mile and I'm definitely going to try his other non-horror work. Its a shame that others don't give him more of a chance on that front.

It would have been a four, I gave it a three. If you take my advice about the "Mother" parts of the book, you will probably have a much better experience.
(Now I'm wondering if I was forewarned about this somewhere in the beginning and simply ignored it.)

I'm also interested in talking to someone who has read it, about a certain portion of the book..."Could that really happen?". Should this be marked "Magical Realism"?

Try Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption: A Story from Different Seasons and The Body: A Novella in Different Seasons.

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments Oh yah... those two books are great recommendations, Almeta!

I agree with Almeta and Debra. If it weren't for The King, I would have "fallen through the cracks" at 12 years old and wouldn't be a reader today. The Green Mile is a perfect example of literature that is not horror. Also good to recommend to those "I don't like King" reader is the short story, The Body. There are many people out there who don't realize that the movie "Stand By Me" was actually a book written by the master. Probably the most amazing thing about The King, is his ability to form long lasting relationships with his reader, Constant Reader. Every reader of Stephen King feels they are his Constant Reader. A Constant Reader feels that The King his speaking directly to him/her. He is brilliant.

message 110: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (vampiresessah) | 60 comments I'm proud to announce that I just turned the last page of The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel with just about an hour left till midnight!
I was really struggling with this one but the last about 100 pages of the story finally picked up some speed and it was amazing to read how all the little pieces finally clicked together and I was positively surprised that some of my guesses turned out to be correct!

Thanks a lot Debra for making me read this book because otherwise I would maybe have never really picked it up! :D

message 111: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Very well said, April. King and I are lifetime reading buddies! I'm his number 1 fan! hehe

message 112: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Katrina: So glad you finally got through you book and with some time to spare. Very happy it picked up for you enjoyed it in the end.

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments I'll have to check a little later on to see who completed the challenge. Badges will go out to those who completed the challenge, and participant badges to those who attempted. You still have time to post your attempt or success.

Okay, I've finished...and gave it a three, mostly because of the "Mother" switching. If I had caught on to that earlier..."

I had no problem with that part. It was the disjointedness and choppiness that got to me. I don't know if it was the translation or the author's style, but I couldn't get past it. Along with that, I kept waiting for the story to make more sense, to have a direction. I finally gave up on it. I had originally planned to use it as a rainbow book, but I'm glad I didn't have to finish it for that :)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Judy wrote: "I'm eager to see how it turned out. If all the posts are any indication we may have had a 100% completion rate. How cool would that be?"

oops, sorry Judy :(
Maybe a 100% participation rate.

I have to admit my mind was preoccupied this week, and I couldn't concentrate on anything that required focus.

message 116: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilserv) | 490 comments Sadly, I also was not able to complete mine by the deadline. This semester has been way busier than I expected.

message 117: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments So, I stayed up til midnight to finish. Fortunately, it wasn't hard. A Game of Thrones is quite the epic tale and has fully fleshed out characters.

message 118: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments Sigh, somehow I missed this thread during the challenge. I wish I had been keeping up on the posts all month long.

@Catherine, thank you for choosing A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin for me. It was hard going at first as the world is so harsh. However, now I know what the fuss is all about.

You know I think my reading addiction can certainly be attributed to King too, at least in part. I couldn't get enough of his work when I was younger and once you're in the habit of picking up a book, it's hard to stop. And I do love his communications to me, his Constant Reader ;-) it does make you feel appreciated as a reader, which I think some authors can loose sight of.

message 120: by Pragya (last edited Oct 01, 2012 06:12AM) (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4048 comments Sorry I couldn't finish reading Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore . It is a big book and September was more on the busier side. However, I do plan to keep on reading and finish it this month.

message 121: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Participation badges all around! Good job everyone!

message 122: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments Job well done everyone! I guess I have my job cut out for me over the next couple of days.

message 123: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments I finally got around to writing my thoughts down about Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China
http://rusalkii.blogspot.com.au/2012/... if anyone cares.

message 124: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments I had to have a giggle about an hour ago about my bitching how long the book was, and then I saw how long my review was! Pot. Kettle. Black.

I agree, huge insight. Just could have done with a touch of an edit. Or I'm a heartless bastard lol

message 125: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments I started posting the badges for those who have completed and participated in this challenge. I don't know if it was Goodreads or my computer, but it was dragging ever so slowly. I think it may have been MacAfee. My computer was completely frozen by the time I logged off and there were 12 installs for MacAfee. GRRRR!

So please be patient - I will get to the rest soon.

Which Beth participated? That's the last thing I was trying to figure out.

Oh, and there were some who didn't post and from what I could find on their profiles, didn't read, so it's not straight across the board participation. :(

message 126: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments Sorry, it is Philly Beth.

message 127: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments Thanks Beth!

message 128: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments I've been a bad mod!! *hangs head in shame* Badges are finally posted. For some reason, they seem to be thumbnail pics and I'm not sure what the scoop is, but I think they are "clickable" and will take you to my photobucket library and the full picture.

Very sorry for the delay!

message 129: by AmyK (new)

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments I forgive you Janice.

message 130: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60030 comments LOL! Thanks AmyK.

Please let me know if I've missed anyone, or give you the wrong badge.

Badges were given out to those who completed the book, and for those who reported that they gave their book a try even though they didn't finish it.

There were some people who never reported one way or another. If you were one of those, please report your attempt and I will give you a badge.

message 134: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have to tell you all that I have loved reading through this string. I am supposed to be working and I was laughing having a good time and my "cell-mate" stood up to see what all the fun was about. I saw so many book titles that I want to read. I read all of the reviews that were posted too. I love this group. Thanks again, AmyK for talking it up. NOW - back to work...

message 135: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh - about the "cell-mate'. I should have said "cube-mate". Our offices are light gray cubicals, 9 feet by 9 feet and 5 feet high. Hi Tek, huh?

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments That is awesome AmyK - I need that on a t-shirt for sure!

I love this group too. I'm so glad you're having fun with it! Now, could you PLEASE convince my mom to get active? LOL. i convinced her to join and she did. But that's all she did! I don't think she realizes what this all about. In other words, I don't think she realizes that is group is "fun" and not "work". I know she would have have a great time conversing with everyone!

What a great thing for you and your daughter to share!
