I agree! The Green Mile has so much depth to it, as do all his books. I took my favorite definition of friendship from his book, It:
"Maybe there aren't any such things as good friends or bad friends - maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you're hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they're always worth being scared for, and hoping for, and living for. Maybe worth dying for too, if that's what has to be. No good friends. No bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with; people who build their houses in your heart.”
― Stephen King, It

It would have been a four, I gave it a three. If you take my advice about the "Mother" parts of the book, you will probably have a much better experience.
(Now I'm wondering if I was forewarned about this somewhere in the beginning and simply ignored it.)
I'm also interested in talking to someone who has read it, about a certain portion of the book..."Could that really happen?". Should this be marked "Magical Realism"?

Try Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption: A Story from Different Seasons and The Body: A Novella in Different Seasons.

I agree with Almeta and Debra. If it weren't for The King, I would have "fallen through the cracks" at 12 years old and wouldn't be a reader today. The Green Mile is a perfect example of literature that is not horror. Also good to recommend to those "I don't like King" reader is the short story, The Body. There are many people out there who don't realize that the movie "Stand By Me" was actually a book written by the master. Probably the most amazing thing about The King, is his ability to form long lasting relationships with his reader, Constant Reader. Every reader of Stephen King feels they are his Constant Reader. A Constant Reader feels that The King his speaking directly to him/her. He is brilliant.

I was really struggling with this one but the last about 100 pages of the story finally picked up some speed and it was amazing to read how all the little pieces finally clicked together and I was positively surprised that some of my guesses turned out to be correct!
Thanks a lot Debra for making me read this book because otherwise I would maybe have never really picked it up! :D

Okay, I've finished...and gave it a three, mostly because of the "Mother" switching. If I had caught on to that earlier..."
I had no problem with that part. It was the disjointedness and choppiness that got to me. I don't know if it was the translation or the author's style, but I couldn't get past it. Along with that, I kept waiting for the story to make more sense, to have a direction. I finally gave up on it. I had originally planned to use it as a rainbow book, but I'm glad I didn't have to finish it for that :)

oops, sorry Judy :(
Maybe a 100% participation rate.
I have to admit my mind was preoccupied this week, and I couldn't concentrate on anything that required focus.

@Catherine, thank you for choosing

You know I think my reading addiction can certainly be attributed to King too, at least in part. I couldn't get enough of his work when I was younger and once you're in the habit of picking up a book, it's hard to stop. And I do love his communications to me, his Constant Reader ;-) it does make you feel appreciated as a reader, which I think some authors can loose sight of.

http://rusalkii.blogspot.com.au/2012/... if anyone cares.

I agree, huge insight. Just could have done with a touch of an edit. Or I'm a heartless bastard lol

So please be patient - I will get to the rest soon.
Which Beth participated? That's the last thing I was trying to figure out.
Oh, and there were some who didn't post and from what I could find on their profiles, didn't read, so it's not straight across the board participation. :(

Very sorry for the delay!

Please let me know if I've missed anyone, or give you the wrong badge.
Badges were given out to those who completed the book, and for those who reported that they gave their book a try even though they didn't finish it.
There were some people who never reported one way or another. If you were one of those, please report your attempt and I will give you a badge.

HAHA! Now you can't blame me for you making so much noise :)

Cherie, you're going to fit right in here!☺

I love this group too. I'm so glad you're having fun with it! Now, could you PLEASE convince my mom to get active? LOL. i convinced her to join and she did. But that's all she did! I don't think she realizes what this all about. In other words, I don't think she realizes that is group is "fun" and not "work". I know she would have have a great time conversing with everyone!
What a great thing for you and your daughter to share!

I am so jealous of people who are reading great Stephen King material for the first time.
When people say "I don't like Stephen King", this is one of the ones I always challenge them to read. How can you not like The Green Mile collection?"
Ditto! King is was tagged the Horror King and has never lived it down. Yes, he writes great horror fiction, but his genres cover many areas. He does like putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations to see how they hold up. As a huge fan, all I can say is: KING ROCKS!
