I read it sometime in the 90's. There was a huge war with supermen created by nanobots altering their body. A long time after the war, a guy goes into a cave and gets infected with these nanobots. I don't really remember much else about this one. There might have been a subplot with a lady creating nanobots that make people lay on the ground to get nutrition and the bots heal anything wrong with them.

This sounds familiar. I'm going to have to browse through my books and my brain to see if I can catch this one.
No Mimi it's not Prey. That kept popping on my searches, but I'm sure this book is older and slightly different.Thinking about it, the guy goes in the cave because he's wounded or something similar and falls/stumbles though the skeleton that turns to dust and he breathes it in, infecting him.
Sheri S Tepper? One of the Arbai series - Grass, Raising the Stones or Sideshow? There were scary nanobots in Sideshow, and a bit about people getting healed by lying on the ground and being repaired. Don't remember the skeleton part though.
I dont think it's this one, but could it be Greg Bear's Blood Music? I just think of that one when I think of nanobots gone crazy, but I don't remember skeletons, ladies, or caves in it.
Lucy, not the Sheri S Tepper books, though thanks for reminding me of her.Guillermo, nope not Blood Music.
Hopefully I'm not mixing stories and confusing the issue.
Glad to help, Ward. I liked that book but think Modesitt's The Forever Hero trilogy is one of his best SF, although The Parafaith War & Timegods' World are also very good. The latter is 2 books. The second one was written first & called "The Fires of Paratime". It was the first book of his I ever read. His Recluse series is my favorite, though. That's about 20 fantasy books that should be read in published, not chronological order the first time around.
