K.C. Steward (kcsteward) | 7 comments Both. I keep a list of all of the books I'm interested in reading. I download samples to my iphone. Then, if it's a book that I know I'm going to encourage others to read, I buy so I can pass it on. If not, I rent it from the library.

I prefer to read in English. Dutch books are fun (and Dutch is my native language), but for some reason English books seem more fun, more interesting. And it isn't a stupid question, you are the first one to ask it. Though I am unsure how to answer on it, since I don't know exactly what you mean with difference? Do you mean the language or the switching between them or something totally different?

Also a bit unrelated. If books are officially brought out in English I try to find them in English (sometimes that fails (mostly with children books) and I search for the Dutch version and read that). I have found that humour, but also names or events happening change when translated.

message 54: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean | 553 comments I like the bookstore because I like to spend time looking at the new releases (as well as the other books). I like knowing that once I leave the store with book they are mine to keep. I don't have to give it back or renew it so I can keep it longer if I haven;t finished reading it. Also if the book is requested by another person through the library the you cannot renew the book. Also I like reading new clean books because lets be honest some library books are dirty, smelly, have dried on substances that are questionable on the and have other people's hair stuck in the pages *Shudders*.

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Yes, I hate when I get books from the library and they're in crappy condition!

I know. I've found some questionable things in library books... its gross

message 57: by Ally (new)

Ally (arhart) Well, right now I prefer the Amazon kindle store :) But for argument's sake, I preferred a bookstore before I got my kindle.

All of the books in a bookstore are clean and shiny and smell nice :) Maybe it's just my library, but most of the books are stained and smell funny. It doesn't make for an enjoyable reading experience.

Then again, once can only spend so much money on books. So I'm bound to go to the library on occasion, especially for those uber expensive novels.

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Yes! I love the bookstore but I think I spend too much there! Usually after a big trip to the bookstore I go to the library for a little while:)

Ally (arhart) Jacquelyn wrote: "Yes! I love the bookstore but I think I spend too much there! Usually after a big trip to the bookstore I go to the library for a little while:)"

Exactly! If only for my own sanity to that I can tell myself I don't spend too much money on books...

message 60: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I know right!

message 61: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments 2 hours?!?! Mine is about 20 minutes away! That's cool though, how you get new books right away. Maybe I would use my library more if they did that! :D

message 62: by Ally (new)

Ally (arhart) You're lucky to have such a great library! My library is that way with some of the more popular "adult" books. But young adult books? No way. In fact, I'll be lucky if it comes in at all without manually requesting it. That's just a byproduct of the fact that barely any teens in my town use the library, though.

Actually, now that I think about it, the delay between when a book comes out and when my library has it isn't a big deal for me anymore. My to-read list has grown so much since I've starting using Goodreads in the past couple years (on an old account). Now, as long as it isn't a sequel to a pre-existing favorite series (of which I would buy anyway) there's always plenty of books to fill the void until my library gets it in.

Yet another bonus of using GR!

message 63: by Birdie (new)

Birdie (purple_feather22) | 294 comments Because of where I live I'm forced to buy all of my books. The closest library to me with a decent selection is over an hour away. I would love to be able to go to the library but its just not an option for me.

message 64: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Wow! Over an hour away?

message 65: by Jaime (new)

Jaime I get most of my books from the library because I don't have money to buy all my books at B&N or on my Nook at the pace I read! The libraries near my home (there are 2 close by) both have wide selections so if one doesn't have a book the other will most likely have it! I've had to buy my latest books on my Nook though. (libraries are closed from the storm ): )

message 66: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) All of the libraries near where I live are rubbish, and even the young adult sections of the book stores leave something to be desired. It's a shame :(

message 67: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments That is a shame, Katie.

Birdie (purple_feather22) | 294 comments Jacquelyn wrote: "Wow! Over an hour away?"

Yep, rural California isn't my friend. I have to drive 30 minutes just to get to the closest Barns and Noble. I'm really thankful for my nook. Getting things off the internet is such a convenience for me.

message 71: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments My Barnes and Noble is maybe 20 minutes away. That's why I save up my money and go every 3-4 months! Next trip is in late December :D

QueenofBooksandDarkness I definitely prefer the bookstore. I like having a good book that I can read over and over again. If its the first of a series I usually check it out and then buy the rest of the series if I enjoyed it.

message 73: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments That's why I like bookstores as well! :D

message 74: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (jeansoso) | 25 comments I LOVE the library. I tried going to book stores but it didn't feel right. I have been going to the public library since elementary school and it is the only place for me. You can stay from the time they open to the time they close. Just grad a book sit on the floor and begin reading simple as that. I'm not a person to continue to read books over and over again, once or twice is fine so the system is perfect for. I don't have to pay for anything and I return the book within a month ready to check out another one. What could be better?

★RavenclawReader★ (stargazer101) | 299 comments Bookstore! My library's books are mostly in super bad condition...

Make sense lol

message 78: by April (new)

April Renee (aprilina) | 86 comments I usually go to the library. I don't have a lot of money so I like to "test drive" books before I consider buying them. If it's a book I fall in love with then I'll buy it or if it's a series I love I'll slowly buy it. I did that with the Series of Unfortunate Events and Harry Potter.

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

Library! Free books!!! I like owning books as well but I think the aspect of borrowing books Is easier

message 80: by Holly (new)

Holly Letson (bookaholicholly) | 28 comments At our library, they have a book room that sells books. If you go to your library alot, you should check to see if yours does as well. The money raised from that always goes to the library to buy more books for us to check out.
Also, thrift stores and flea markets are a great place to buy cheap books as well.
I get most of my books these 3 places.
------------
Right now, our library is closed, though.

message 81: by Dana * (new)

Dana * (queenofegypt) Definitely library. There are a select few authors that I will always buy, because I want to read over and over, like Stephen King. Our library has e-books also, which is nice.

message 82: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 205 comments Definitely a bookstore! Once I have my hands on a book I don't want to give it back! I also like to collect books, that where I spend all my money :P

What a wonderful idea? :) I am going to check if my library has this offer too!

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (simplysarah13) | 315 comments Library. Plus my library offers ebooks too. If it's free, why not use it?

message 85: by Trisha, lives on coffee (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments My library just started offering downloadable audio books! You download it directly to your computer and then put it on your ipod/mp3/etc.

I thought that was a pretty cool new option!

the ebook option is also great!

message 86: by Leanne (new)

Leanne | 16 comments Library because I only read books once. :)
I don't get to go to the bookstore and only buy them if its on sale!

message 87: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 4527 comments I like to do both. I usually check books out from the library first. If I really like the book then I will buy a copy for my own collection. I also buy books that are on clearance at the bookstores.
I work at a library so I am constantly bringing books home with me.

message 88: by Megan (new)

Megan Brooker | 473 comments Library since I only read book's once and don't like to pay for hardcover copies. I would like to eventually like to have a big home library so maybe when I have kids they could use it? Guess I better get started then. Also is it just me or are more and more bookstores closing due to e-books?

message 89: by Abigail (new)

Abigail (amp5482yahoocom) | 54 comments library. I can never read the same book over again so if i bought books i would have a huge library myself

True... A lot of small bookstores are going out of business.

message 91: by Tabitha (new)

Tabitha Library always, unless I have read the book more than once because I love it. Then I buy it so I can read it whenever.

message 92: by Emily (new)

Emily Anne (emilyannereaderrising) I prefer bookstores! I am a hoarder... especially of books! Also, I am definitely a re-reader!

Me too!

message 94: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracesoftracy) | 93 comments I love both. I go to the library if they have the books I want to read because I don't wanna buy books if I'm only going to read them once. If the library doesn't have books or books in the series that I'm reading then I buy books there. Like this book store has books they sell for half the price of the book you would buy at like books-a-million or B&N

message 95: by Erin (new)

Erin Latimer | 108 comments When I was dirt poor and living on kraft dinner and hot dogs I went to the library and got free books. But now that I can afford it a bit more I buy all new books and support my favourite authors.

Of course, that also means never buying new clothes or anything else frivolous, but hey...I'd rather wear the old used coat and buy the new shiny book, lol.

message 96: by Emma (new)

Emma Winter | 35 comments As much as I love buying books I usally only read books once and books can get kind of pricey so I'm going with library!

message 97: by harshini (new)

harshini (watchmeread) | 644 comments Library, mostly. I guess I would make my mum bankrupt if I bought every book lol. Library is a good way out. I think I have to earn my own mo ey to create a library of my own

I rarely reread too. I sometimes borrow from friends and library :) But I love to buy a few new ones once in awhile :D

message 100: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 24 comments I'm on the fence on this subject. If I am not sure about a book I will check it out at the library and then later on get my own copy.
