Matthew (masupert) | 0 comments Listening to the podcast on the way into work this morning I had the thought cross my mind that I would love to see a real sword and laser pub somewhere. It then got me thinking as to what this place might actually look like and how it would be marketed.

Would it sell books as well as drinks? What would the decor look like? What would the atmosphere be like? The patrons? Food? Music? Gaming? Something else?

Now I am talking a real pub here, not an imaginary pub set on a space station. What would your ideal sword and laser look like if you could go there after work/school or on a Friday night.

I am primarily a laser, but mine would probably have a bit of an old world pub flair, perhaps even a smoking room sort of style. A lot of dark wood. Lots of leather chairs and small reading lamps for individuals. The science fiction would only be in small bursts. Perhaps a bit of lighting or neat gadget here or there. A single sword on the wall somewhere.

I think I would try to keep the place quiet, almost a "towny" bar atmosphere. Encourage the look of people sitting in corners or nooks.

Drinks would focus on classic cocktails like Old fashions, Manhattans, Martini's, with a small bit of kitsch for drinks from our favorite novels like butter beer and romulan ale.

I feel the dark old wood lends itself well to both an old school sci-fi and fantasy setting.

So what would your bar look like?

Skip | 517 comments I would picture it like the old Harry’s at Hanover Square, in downtown NYC. Harry’s started in the basement of the old India house, and expanded over the years so that once you left the large bar in the main room to go to eat in one of the small rooms off of it you would occasionally have to duck and watch your step as the floor and ceiling levels changed.

The S&L Pub would be something like that, a large warm main room with other smaller rooms attached and hallways that lead to whichever SFF setting you were coming from or going to. Good beer is a necessity, as are proper cocktails, and I would be fine if they kept Wednesday as Beef Wellington day.

aldenoneil | 1000 comments I imagine it split in half, one part an old-timey, mahogany & stone fantasy bar, and the other a neat, clean, white counters & blue lights sci-fi bar.

Then, at the top of every hour, all the patrons would fight.

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments We start with The Way Station:

Put in a hole in the wall for Lem to poke his head through. Give the actual bar a mad scientist's lab make over. Trade out a few paintings for some 1950s style book cover art. Hang a couple of swords/laser guns. Boom, done.

Joe Informatico (joeinformatico) | 888 comments Well, obviously it's going to need two floors. The "sword" floor will be in the style of a Celtic-style Irish pub from the Irish Pub Company. But maybe a little more rustic-looking.

The "laser" floor will be a cyberpunk-esque goth-industrial dance club.

Keith (keithatc) Ah, someone already mentioned Way Station! Great place. I'd add a dash of the recently opened Gin Palace

Casey | 654 comments There must be a stone fireplace. I would have the tables contain some sort of interface where you could order food or drinks from the bar/kitchen. I love the idea of a quiet bar, as I honestly do not like a loud chaotic environment full of other people's noise. Keep it quiet and yet warm, provide areas for people to gather in bunches while keeping out of the way areas available for two's and three's. Have some sort of ongoing science fiction and fantasy trivia game wherein if a person correctly answered 10 or 20 questions in a row, they get a free drink, something to eat, or a free book.

I don't think this would be practical but it would be awesome, let's have pneumatic tubes that deliver food and drink to the tables???

Keith (keithatc) One request -- no open mic night. I don't want Sy Snoodles and the Max Rebo Band showing up to play an unwelcome set

I have been thinking about something similar, what it would be like to live in skyrim times epic fantasy times and was thinking it might be like new zealand (I have never been to new zealand only heard a little about it so apologise if im way off) but what I heard was that its pretty cold and most houses have open fires rather than central heating, and I can imagine it being in some areas, forest rich.
Anyway I think my pub would sell very fantasy meals roast dinners and stews big lumps of meat and cheese platters and such, im more of a fantasy girl so I might skip the laser decor but have the books on offer to buy there or something like that, it would have very woody decor with little nooks for people to cosy up and read with open fires, maybe sell real ale. wow I wanna go there now.

Kris (kvolk) I think it looks like the sword kinda of place with stone and fire places and wood tables but it has subtle electonic thinks like small matter convertors to make food and drink as well as robot bartenders etc.

or it might look like this place...

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2668 comments The Edison in LA would also be a good starting place. It's totally steampunk, but a few Sword and Laser props would make it work.

Madame, I'll thank you not to engage in filk on the premises. We have a jukebox for that, stocked with nothing but Leonard Nimoy's Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Truly, it satisfies both the sword AND the laser.
