Julie | 465 comments Tink!

I LOVE the new nickname! Funny thing, one of my 'code names' in middle school-you know, in case our notes were compromised-was Suzi Q. I think it's quite fitting!

I feel odd saying this, but congrats on your illness! It seem that that's the only way we get the chance to write! Have fun enjoying your freedom too! (Intoxicating freedom, hu? ;D )

I think Bunny and Bruno are long overdue for a play date with Pan, if that's ok. Just send them back if they are any trouble...Bunny has been known to shake his tail a time or two.

As for my writing today...I haven't done any... I was at work 11 hrs, came home , and had to grade some more. I may not get any writing done tomorrow either. I'm hoping to be done with report cards tomorrow, but there is another paperwork deadline on Wednesday.

:(

I'm ready for a break. I'm so behind on my NaNoWriMo word counts.

Paige Miller | 4362 comments Glad you like it, Julie! That's so funny about when you were in middle school- LOL!

*coughs* Yeah, it's a pain, but at least I get to write! And I made smoothies! Not quite as good as Jamba Juice, but they're not bad!

Of course! Pan is very happy to have friends over! I'm not worried- the worst they can do is trash my cubi, and then I'll just have Rayanna put it back in order.

Oh no! Come on, Julie! You can do it!

Stupid work. :(

Julie | 465 comments ...oy...

what a week...

Words Tuesday and Wednesday: 0 (ok, 200 words so far on the Metric unit test I'm writing. ...hehe, I guess I AM writing today!)

I'm planning to crawl out of solitary confinement sometime tomorrow...

On a happier note, its raining!! We desperately need the rain here.

Off to bed!

Good Morning Julie,

Rainy days and writing are wonderful partners ;]

Wishing you a day filled with many magical moments!

Paige Miller | 4362 comments I love rain. :D Where are you, JQ?

message 156: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Good Evening!

*sees Bunny and Bruno making sad faces from the neglect. Feeds Bruno a big steak, and Bunny a Broccoli feast.* Sorry boys!

Dee, I can't agree more! There is something enchanting about a good rain. I especially love the first rain of the summer, but I'll have to wait a while for that! I'm sure I'd feel differently if I lived in, say, Forks. ;)

Tink, I'm down south in Austin, Texas. We are not only the capitol, but also smack-dab in the middle of the state. *pulls out the Texas weather soap-box to share more info than you probably wanted to hear.* Texas has some crazy weather. Just a month or two ago we broke two local weather records in one day...the coldest and hottest temperatures for Austin... in ONE day! (It was in the 80's in the morning, then the cold front moved in at night bringing the temp below freezing.) *puts soap-box away* Even though the weather is odd, and we don't have real seasons, I still LOVE living here.

Tink, what part of the world are you from, if you don't mind me asking?

So, today, I treated myself to leaving work a little early and took my lappy (laptop) to the nearest 'bucks (starbucks) and wrote for about an hour. It was divine. Coffee and writing go together like Edward and Bella.

Words so far: 200 for today, I'm going to try to get a few more down before bed.

Happy Friday to all!

Julie | 465 comments Thanks Dee!

YAY!!! Spring Break has officially begun!

I'm adding to yesterday's word count! I was able to get out another 100 words before bed. I have a whopping total of 300 for yesterday.

I'm still enjoying the drizzly weather.

Ok, back to the writing table for me! Bunny and Bruno, why don't you hop on over to Dee's to see her new digs. *B and B both smile and hop out quickly*

message 159: by Paige (new)

Paige Miller | 4362 comments Hey Julie,

Austin, huh? That's cool. I'm in CA, so I get what you mean about not having seasons.

I've been to Forks! I have! I have pictures! :D I love Seattle- as soon as I graduate college, I'm going there to live. :D

Julie | 465 comments Hey Tink!

Wow, you have been to Forks! Does it look the same as the "Forks" in the movie? Some of my friends and I were pondering vacation spots, and we discussed Seattle. We all agreed that if we were already there, then we might as well visit Forks too... it would be a shame not to really. ;D

So it's another busy weekend. I did a bridal portrait shoot today for a friend this evening. Then tomorrow, I'm helping her assemble the invitations with the whole bridal party- well, the women of the bridal party. It should be fun! I'm into crafty projects.

Words for this weekend:
Friday: 220
Saturday 460

NaNoWriMo Total: 3,000 words.

That's actually more that I thought it would be. I'll be taking full advantage of this time I have during Spring Break. :D

Julie | 465 comments Good Morning...whoops, now afternoon!

Hello Bunny and Bruno. Bunny gets extra carrots this morning for being SUCH a good muse and helping me write 1005 words this morning! (Don't feel left out Bruno. Here, have some extra steak for helping me with the photo shoot yesterday!)

My boys are such good little helpers. Oh, I'm into the "reveal" part of my story, where Joy (and the readers are) is finding out what's happening to her. I'm getting so into it that I could write all day!

Alas, I have plans, so I'll have to take a respite from the writing for now.

New NaNoWriMo Total: 4,005 words

Not really. It's much more small town, if you can believe it. In fact , it's very boring. It's just cool to say I've been there. However, it really wasn't worth the drive from Seattle to Forks. 4 hours!!! GAAAH.

Here's your reward boys for being such good muses.

Words this evening: 408

Total today: 1,413 words

So, onto some cube decorating!!

I decided I needed an inspiration piece or two to help me come up with a theme for my cube.

The first is a red chaise lounge, to relax with my lappy and write. I'll get a convenient side table for my iced tea later!

This one is a little over the top, but it'll work until I find one that is more taditional:

Then for my second inspriation piece:

A poster from Baz Lurhman's Moulin Rouge:

I'll hang this next to my picture of Edward. ...what was that Bunny? You want to be in the photo with Edward? Don't worry, I'll try to photo-shop you in later.

Possible new name for cube: Julie Q's Red Romp Room

...or is that too risque? Votes?

See what happens when you give a teacher a break!?

Votes, I need votes!

I could just switch back and forth. My cube will just change names like people change tee-shirts! ;)

Yes, I agree it's ironic that he looks more normal when he...

Spoiler ALERT

he's actually suicidal in the story. Though I think the poster captures his calm resolve. The look Bella describes as she's closing in on him in Italy. Oh, I can't wait for the movie!

Spoiler over
He's one hot vamp! I hope the fix the whole sparkle issue in this next movie.

message 171: by Paige (new)

Paige Miller | 4362 comments Oh, God, I know. I was like, What's he doing? UNDRESSING? Oh, he's supposed to be sparkling. I had a friend with me who hadn't read the book, and she was all, "What the F is he doing????" And I laughed so hard.

message 172: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Ha! Yes, I remember my friend and I looking at each other when he was showing off his skin, and both said "sweaty?" at the same time. One of the many non-intentionally funny parts in the movie! Don't get me wrong, I still love the movie! (Whoo-hoo, can't wait till Friday!)

So today, I ran a TON of errands and did a lot of reading too! More SOA, and Tink's Soulfire! I'm enjoying both immensely!

Tomorrow, I'm going to the King Tut exhibit in Dallas (4 hrs away). It'll take most of the day, but I should have some time in the evening to write!

It's awfully quiet! Oh yes, the boys are still at Tink's! I'll pick them up tomorrow! Night y'all!

message 173: by Paige (new)

Julie | 465 comments Got in some writing...I'll admit though, I did finish my 4th disk of Mad Men first. (gotta love Netflix)

Words:217

Off to read before bed

(Tink, you are absolutely putting me to shame! You reading machine you! I'm on pg. 83 when Lot is well ... SPOILER... exchanging tactical information with Brydw and Faustus. I know I'm not supposed to judge Lot....but he's making it difficult! Dee, you've made a wonderful 'villain-ish' chracter. I say villain-ish, because I know he's not supposed to be THE villian.

message 178: by Dee, Fan of the "Young Prose Society" (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 3382 comments Mod
Hey Julie,

I LOVE Lot. He is very complex. Wait until the next scene. He is very protective of Meleagant. As if he blames himself for Meleagant's downward spiral.

As much as Lot proclaims that he is only loyal to himself...he is loyal to Uther, and to his friends. Obviously, he does not consider Brydw and Faustus his friends ;]

Or does he?

My favorite Lot moments are those when he is alone with Uther. Especially after the upcoming battle :)

Thank you so much for taking time out of your writing day to read SOA :]

Wishing you a most wonderful "hump day."
Dee Marie

message 179: by Julie (last edited Mar 18, 2009 08:35AM) (new)

Julie | 465 comments Hehe,

***SOA Spoilers!***
I spoke too early! I needed to finish page 83 before casting judgment! I thought Lot was going to leak tactical info to Byrdw and Faustus. Lot is back in my good graces. Now one of those two weren't dead yet... I wonder if he'll come back (maybe the poison didn't work?)

I just finished chapter 14, and they are getting ready for the battle. I feel that Lot is a mini Uther in training. Uther seems to trust him with a much responsibility.

Melegant, I really don't know what to think about him. Is his conscious eating away at his physical heath? I don't see him going into battle and making it out alive.

Off to read ch 15, I have to find out the outcome of this battle, even thought Merlin predicted victory, before I do anything else today!

message 180: by Dee, Fan of the "Young Prose Society" (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 3382 comments Mod
Ouch...that is the longest chapter in the book. It was written while listening to Fall Out Boy. It was also the hardest chapter to write. Writing battle scenes is very draining. Geez, who would know!

***SOA Spoiler Alert***

As to Meleagant...yes, the act of killing Merlin's foster parents is eating away at him. Remember, he is only 15 years old. He is a month older than Lot, yet he is very immature for his age (compared to Lot). Plus, Meleagant is one of the youngest members of the "Young Royal Guard."

Meleagant has killed men in battle, but never in "cold blood." Something that he did not have the stomach for ;] Right before the battle, his mind is beginning to snap.

Lot's back-story: His mother died at birth. He was an only child, and his father, King of the Orkney Isles, blames Lot for his beloved wife’s death.

It is historical fact, that in medieval times, royalty would often foster their sons into the households of other kings. Lot’s father was honored when Vortigern (the High King) offered to take Lot into his care at a very young age. Vortigern arranged to train Lot as a knight, in exchange for Lot’s father’s loyalty and protection of the northern shores.

Lot (at 15) looks upon Uther as a father figure, even though Uther is only in his early twenties.

Uther on the other hand, is very jealous of the relationship that his older brother, Ambros, has with Merlin. A relationship that has left Uther feeling “left out.” Merlin is not of a military mind. Lot is! Ambros is more of a dreamer, as is Merlin.

Lot is to Uther, what Merlin is to Ambros.

There is a lot of pitting between Merlin and Lot, as well as between Merlin and Uther.

As to the brothers at the campfire…both drank from the same wineskin. One man was much larger than the other, resulting in the poison taking longer to work?

***End of Spoiler Alert***

message 181: by Julie (last edited Mar 18, 2009 02:34PM) (new)

Julie | 465 comments *** Possible Spoilers***

So, I finished Ch.18, and thought that would be a good stopping place for now. (be for the coronation of the new high king)

Thanks for the backstory! It gives me a greater insight to the characters. :D What you said about Lot and Uther, and Merlin and Ambros confirmed my thoughts on that too!

I laughed out loud at the wine-throwing scene! I didn't expect Merlin to throw the wine AGAIN! HA! The boy has guts for sure!

I now get that whole "left out" part you mentioned. It seems that Uther wishes he were more in touch with his "emotional side," and takes that out on others? Maybe he's a tiny bit jealous of the fact Ambros is in touch with his emotional/intellectual side- and has a meaningful friendship w/ his protege, Merlin.

Ahh, it's so good!

****End of Spoiler***

So, before I added more to my plot, of Joy V, I decided to go back and re-read some of my story first. To make sure I'm still going in the direction that I planned on.

It's funny because I hadn't read some of it in a while, and I found myself wondering "What's gonna happen next!?" HA! I felt a little stupid for wondering that with my OWN story!

So, I did some revising, and added to some parts that needed a little extra clarification. So I don't have an exact word count. Maybe 200 words today? I deleted some too though.

I think I'll take a break now. I see why writing can be a full time job in itself! :D

message 184: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Hey Dee,

I bet! It's funny because Uther and Ambros remind me of my older brothers. Much of what was said and done in the chapter remind me of them! :D

Oh, and I meant to mention earlier, yes, the battle scene was intense. I can imagine it being difficult to write! You love all of your chracters and don't want them to die. Well, except to the former high king maybe!?

So now I'm wondering about Faustus...they never found him...maybe he's still out there!? Hmmm.

So, onto my writing for tonight. I sat down tonight with a goal of 2,000 words, and by golly I met my goal!

I had to cheer myself on at one point, but I'm glad I pressed on!

Total words tonight: 2,115 words

:D

I need to make the most of this time I have here on spring break! I'd like to write at least 5,000 more words before the vacation is over. (More would be even better.)

Night y'all!

*feeds bunny and bruno* Yes, you have been good boys!

Morning Julie.

WOW 2,115 words! That is outstanding! You go girl!

OMGosh, I am soOOooo excited about the release of Twilight. I pre-ordered it on Amazon.com and then pre-ordered a copy at my local Blockbuster so I could get it the day it was released.

I had been asking every day if Blockbuster was going to stay open at Midnight Friday, and every day they said no :(

So I was planning to go to the midnight release party at Wally-Mart...and buy a third copy. Geez, I am Pathetic!

Yesterday, I called Blockbuster again...and YIPPIE they are going to have a midnight release party after all :]

Only problem...I can't get anyone to go to the party with me.

Are you going to a release part at Borders?

Read some of the DVD reviews and they all say that Rob's commentary is just too funny.

message 187: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments No you are not pathetic! Just determined! I think it's great! If I had anyone to go with, I'd go to the one at Borders, but no one will go with me. (If I were in NY, I'd definitely go w/ you!) ...Though...one of my friends my be secretly planning to go...I need to give her a call. :D
I went to a Harry Potter release party by myself once, and was sad I didn't have a friend to share my excitement with. Of course, one always makes friends in line. :) I'm sure it'll be nuts here, Austinites love their Harry Potter, and their Twilight!

GAHHH...I just checked the Borders site again, and the "order status" feature is STILL "temporarily unavailable." I guess all of us who pre-ordered Twilight are getting antsy and flooding their system.

;)

What do you mean you almost bought a third, Dee? You've already bought two copies? O.O LOL! It's worth it, though. :)

message 189: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Kenzie,
Hehe, yeah, sounds tedious, but it can be fun if your friends are with you. :D

Today's writing update so far:

Words: 924

For some reason, I am SOOO sluggish today, and a bit dissatisfied with my work.

SO, I pose this question to all:
Is it better to crank out the words to get your story down on paper, and then revise the heck out of it later -or- is it better to take your time and spend more time on the details as you go along?

message 190: by Kenzie, Help feed the hungry. Donate to 30 Hour Famine! (new)

Kenzie | 1305 comments Mod
I'm excited, though. I'm going with my friend, her mother, my mother, and my sister. :)

924 words, that's not sluggish.

Hmmm ... tough question. I guess you should do whatever feels right to you. I probably would spend my time working on details, but that's just my preference. *shrugs*

message 191: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Oh, that does sound fun. I'm sure it'll be a prime chance to people watch! :) See how many people you see out there with vampire fangs. and whatnot.

Yeah, 924 words is more than what I crank out usually, I guess I felt that I was over thinking some parts. I think it's just because I was working for so long, I thought I would have gotten more words out.

So, yeah, I feel that I work on the details more as I go along too.

That's the best part. People watching is hilarious. Some of the things people do.... LOL

This one time I went cart-watching. There were really high winds, so we watched as the carts got pushed in the blow. This one ran into a car and set of its alarm. :)

That happens to me, too. Sometimes when you work for a while and check how much you've done you're surprised. Whether it's a happy surprise "Yay, I've done more than I thought I did!" or and unhappy one "That's it?! Really?!" it's still a surprise. :)

I think a lot of people do, without even realizing it.

Have you ever put something in a story, and had no idea what it was there for? And then later have it be some major part of the plot?

That happens to me all the time.

message 193: by Julie (last edited Mar 20, 2009 07:18AM) (new)

Julie | 465 comments You know, I haven't written a ton of stories, but yeah, I'm pretty sure I've done that. Actually, when I think of it, it happened today.

I've been writing the "reveal" where my main character is becoming aware of what's going on, and the person telling her first uses the term "we" when talking about the organization he works for. Later though, he switched to "they." (separating himself from the company, almost pitting himself against it?) At first I thought of it as a mistake, but then looking at it again, I'm going to make it a bigger part, and go with it!

I will say this is the most of one story I've written, EVER. It's intimidating and liberating all at once.

I'm getting nearing the part in my story that I don't have a "plan" for, and it's starting to freak me out. I think that's what is also slowing me down. Once I reach that part, I really have to think about what will happen next, and some of those uncomfortable actions sequences, where people may get hurt.

It's ok though, I thought I was stuck before. So then, I kept on truckin', and the rest of the story just came to me...I'm sure that's what i'll need to do when I reach that point again!

K, I guess I should go back to my movie (this popcorn break lasted longer than I expected!): The Lake House, for the millionth time (ok, maybe the 5th time in a year!). It's kinda cheesy, but still very sweet! Time is a big part of the movie, even though the main characters aren't time traveling. The story is completely different from mine, but I always find some aspect that makes me consider the "time" issue in my story.

I'm guess I'm hoping it'll bring an extra kick of inspiration!

message 194: by Dee, Fan of the "Young Prose Society" (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 3382 comments Mod
Loved the Lake House…have you watched August Rush?

As to your question...Just keep writing. Relax and don't force your story. Imagine your characters, and let them take over your writing :)

Outstanding word counts by the way! I am very proud of you.

Oh, and I am so excited, I have a purpose for the Twilight DVD release party. The local paper just contacted me and asked if I could cover the event for them. Guess it pays off to be pathetic after all ;]

message 195: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Thanks Dee! Your encouragement is reassuring and helpful!

Yes! I loved August Rush too! It was so beautifully made too, and had all that great music. I love those feel-good movies. :)

Thanks for the advice. :) I'm sure I'm going to go back and revise the heck out of what I've been working on. Part of it is that I don't know if I want to reveal as much as I am in this part of the story. So, I'll just write it all now anyway, and I can always move parts around later.

I'm thinking of changing my whole beginning...its very linear now. so, I've only posted part of chapter 3 and 4 on goodreads. As I've been reading those chapters alone-trying to imagine I'm new to the story, I really like the idea starting the story there, and throwing in the first 2 chapters as flashbacks.

Don't worry, I'm not going to make any impulsive decisions! I'll wait until my story is finished before I do anything wild and crazy, like that.

I'll work as much as possible, then it's time for lunch with an old friend I haven't seen in a while. :D

message 196: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments Oh! I meant to mention in my last post!

Congrats on the Twilight Release Party event review!! It will be so much fun to people watch, and even more fun to write!!

If you can, post it to goodreads when you are done! I'd love to read it, and I'm sure others would too!

:D

message 197: by Julie (new)

Julie | 465 comments So, I did very little content writing today.
I mainly focused on revising and editing my chapter 5. I will say, there is something to be said for letting a piece/chapter sit for a while, and revisiting it later. My chapter 5 still isn't perfect (when will it ever be?), but I did get a lot of the big mistakes and changed some awkward wording. I mainly tightened stuff up. I did go back an add more emphasis to a scene that will prove to be more important later on in the story.

Words added while editing: 141
