Tony Talbot | 23 comments I'd go for forever, and the second law of thermodynamics be damned!

Or at least until we land someone on Mars, or find intelligent life somewhere in the universe...

Paul Vincent (astronomicon) | 67 comments As long as possible. Dying is such a waste of experience and knowledge.

I agree. So long as your mind continues to function properly.

Paul Vincent (astronomicon) | 67 comments Losing your mind's functions is a similar waste in most respects.

Paul Vincent (astronomicon) | 67 comments Maybe "Until I choose to stop" would be a better answer? (of course that assumes no loss of mental ability so great as to remove the ability to make that decision).

Christopher Grey (greyauthor) | 34 comments I always loved Tolkien's notion of immortality. The idea that the lives of humans were so fleeting to elves that they looked at entire generations of families in order to understand how people work.

Paul Vincent (astronomicon) | 67 comments I think the best answer to this (superseding my previous reply) is "Until I've finished everything I want to get done."

I'd hate to die with projects unfinished.

Olga Godim (olgagodim) I'd like to throw a damper into this discussion. Living forever means to stop getting older at certain age. What age would you draw the line at? 20? 30? 40? Or do you keep getting older, with all the inconveniences of old age attached for eternity? Argh! Not a nice prospect.
Another question: what about marriage? Do you stay with the same partner for eternity? Some people would shudder at the idea. Or do you remove marriage from the equation? Or do you dissolve it automatically after, say 50 years?

Paul Vincent (astronomicon) | 67 comments On the subject of marriage, why not leave it as it is now. You can either stay married until the end, or get a divorce if you want. I don't see the need to any sort of automatic dissolution of marriages.

You could not live forever if you kept biologically ageing. Surely the two must be mutually exclusive. If your body kept degrading due to age you would at some point die any way. I'm guessing that somewhere between 25-30 would be the optimum for most people? If I stopped ageing at 21 I'd be an inch or so shorter than I am now!
