I haven't read Genome, but based on the reviews and Goodreads description it seems to be more a description of the human genome, while The Selfish Gene is about the role of genes generally in evolution. I have read the Selfish Gene and it's excellent. Moreover, it seems to be an important book. It is referenced and cited in many other more recent books. It's well written and can be understood by a non-scientist like me.
I would say it depends on what you are most interested in. However, since both books have been nominated for the group read for October, one possibility is to wait and see whether one of them is selected. Then you can read along with the group and benefit from the discussion.
Have you checked out the group bookshelf?

The books are sometimes categorized by field of study, so you can click on the shelf named "genetics" to find additional selections on that topic.
