Barb This was not a good football weekend for me :( However, I enjoyed watching Peyton Manning work his magic again. So good to see him back after such a long time away from the game!

message 103: by Kris (new)

Kris (kmell33) Wasn't the greatest week for me, either. Luckily my pick of the Lions squeeked through. Who'd a thought it would be a nail biter against the Rams.

I also enjoyed watching Peyton this week. What a class act!

Yeah, I was living in Cleveland when they kept getting beat by the Broncos and John Elway in the Championship game! It was soooo awful - I hated the Broncos!

message 113: by Alison (last edited Sep 24, 2012 05:51PM) (new)

Alison | 3 comments Perfect first challenge for me! I'll be a fan on the sidelines -- Saints of course, Who Dat!!

9/13/12 - 2/13/13

1. The Saints are based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Read a book set in Louisiana. Zeitoun by Dave Eggers 9/15/12

2. The official team colors are Gold, Black and White. Read a book whose cover is primarily one of these colors or a combination of them. The Tower's Alchemist (The Gray Tower Trilogy, #1) by Alesha Escobar 9/21/12

3. The team became official on All-Saints Day and since there is a large Catholic population in New Orleans the owner thought it only fitting to name the team the "Saints." Read any book where religion plays an important role OR read any book with religion as a genre on it's main page OR read a book with Christian fiction listed as a genre on its main page. God Drives A Tow Truck by Vicky Kaseorg 9/24/12

4. The Saints have had 3 Hall of Fame players. Read a book with a character whose name matches one of these players (first or last): Jim Finks, Rickey Jackson, Willie Roaf

5. Pick a set of initials matching one of the players above and read a book whose title includes words that begin with those letters.
Example: If the initials were J.K. you could use With Just One Kiss

6. Read any book whose author's initials can be found in the word SAINTS. The initials do not need to be found in order.
Example: Sherry Thomas: S and T can both be found in Saints.

7. The Saints were established in 1967. Read a book by any author born in that year. This list may help.

8. They won the Super Bowl Championship in 2009. Read any book published in that year.

I know!! That was a shocker last week. I lived in Wisconsin for 4 years and graduated from High School there. My cheesehead friends were frantic last week.

message 120: by Chaitra (new)

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 180 comments Lol. It looks like Leslie is right! :D I'm doing some low level gloating at home, because my husband has two players from Bears in his fantasy league and they're not doing well at all! Pay-back time for his gloating last week!! :D

message 121: by Barb (new)

Barb I think everyone -- cheeseheads or not -- was surprised by that game LOL They're making up for it tonight ... so far!

message 122: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 36 comments As a Bears fan, that game was just embarrassing. 7 sacks! 4 interceptions! *hangs head in shame*

Oh well. I will survive. I'm a Cubs fan too, and if I can survive what they put me through, I can survive anything. :)

message 123: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I couldn't get the game, so I was relying on friends posting on facebook. I heard Cutler was screaming at his teammates at one point. 7 sacks would make me scream, too!! Poor Cutler - my daughter attended Vanderbilt when he was a senior - he does seem so Vandy!! Not a Bears type quarterback at all.

message 124: by Barb (new)

Barb But in all fairness, Rogers had words with his receivers a few times too. And he was sacked more than he should have been; I think I heard someone say it was nearly the same number of times as Cutler. You can tell it's still early in the season!

I was raised to be a Browns fan, Steph, so I've felt your pain many times. I do like the Bears -- in (almost) any game *but against Green Bay :)

Alison | 3 comments Leslie wrote: "Yay, another Saints fan!! Alison, where do you live?"

Hey Leslie, I'm in the Destin FL area. How about you?

message 127: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 36 comments In a way, I can understand Cutler's frustration. Since becoming a Bear, he's never gotten decent protection from his offensive line. That being said, we can't blame all the offensive problems just on the line, and it can't really help team morale for the QB to be yelling at everybody. It's still early in the season though, so maybe things will get better (there's my Cubs fan eternal optimism shining through again). :)

message 128: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Alison, I am from New Orleans but live in Shreveport since Katrina. Will be back in the next couple of years (last child graduating from HS). Can't wait. And Steph Ann, I agree with the fact that he's never gotten the protection he needed. And I do love Matt Forte (Tulane grad) on the team. And being a Saints fan, we are all about the optimism!!

I thought we couldn't claim an extra point until after we'd already read the "main" book?

Barb, I did read the book. I'm confused as to what you are referring. The book for this pick was Cape Storm.

message 133: by Barb (new)

Barb Leslie, maybe I'm confused then, sorry :( I thought you were using Cape Storm for your extra point book -- probably because it as posted under the 'extra point' note in your post. My apologies!

message 134: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Barb, now maybe I'm confused. I don't think you have to read another book to get the extra point. Your book just has to match both tasks. And of course your team has to win!! Cherie, correct me if I'm wrong.

message 135: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Okay, I just went back and re-read the rules and I was obviously completely confused! Thanks for pointing it out to me, Barb. I will go back and fix it. I'm so bad at rules! LOL

message 136: by Barb (new)

Barb LOL Leslie You mean I wasn't the one who had things confused this time? That hardly ever happens!

message 137: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I have a problem with rules!! Somehow I just completely skipped over the part that said I had to read different books.
Actually this makes it so much easier - I was trying to make one book fit 2 different tasks. I'm so glad you caught it, Barb.

message 138: by Barb (new)

Barb It's kinda funny when having to read two separate books makes a challenge easier, but you're right -- it does :D

message 139: by Barb (new)

Barb This was a *good football weekend for me, I'm so much happier than I was at this time last week :)

message 140: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Well, I was sad about my Saints but so happy that the Patriots lost haha!! The look on Bill Belicheck's face was priceless!

It's hard since I've picked two Thursday night games so far - it feels like this should be week 3. I feel out of step with the games. Oh well.

message 141: by Barb (new)

Barb It's weird that they even *have Thursday night games this early in the season. It does make things seem off kilter.

message 142: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleycw) That's why I quit playing Fantasy, I forgot to switch my players that had a bye week before the Thursday games. Too much trouble.

And YES Barb, soooooo happy the Pats lost. I didn't get to see the game, but I imagine his face was amazing. I do know that Rex Ryan's face during the Jets/Steelers game was awesome. He was going to murder somebody

message 143: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Here are the point standings as of this morning:

Adele = 0
Ashley = 6
Ashley CW = 10
