I find it surprising to recommend, on the basis of its emotional honesty, a book with a central metaphor which compares corruption in Russian politics to the shortened life of a young woman with Huntington's Disease.
And yet, the combination of heartache and introspection with politics and chess works very well.

It's a beautiful and affecting book.
