Hi, guys! Please welcome bestselling author Michele Scott. She's graciously agreed to an interview and giving away an e-copy of her fantastic book, THE GREY TIER. To enter, just leave Michele a comment or question. The winner will be chosen on August 29 and notified here. Thanks for your interest and participation!

Hi, Michele. Thanks for taking time to spend with our group and let us get to know a little more about you.

Thank You for having me. :) I'm a Mom, a wife, a daughter, horse lover, and friend first off. Being a writer is a huge aspect of who I am as well. I am the author of 20 books ranging in genre from children's fantasy, mystery, women's fiction and thrillers. I also write under the pen name A.K. Alexander.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I knew when I was 9 years old that I wanted to be a writer. My dad read one of my short stories when I was a kid, looked at me and with tears in his eyes said, "You're a writer." That positive message from my Dad was cemented in me at that moment. So, he inspired me as a kid and he continued to inspire me throughout his life. But the inspiration for the first book came to me when my oldest son was born 21 years ago. Alex was a preemie and remained in the NICU for two weeks. When I brought him home, he needed constant care and I couldn't return to work. So, while taking care of him and being home, I wrote my first novel, which began as a catharsis for me around what we had endured during those first weeks of Alex's life. That book later became my thriller COVERT REICH, which I revised and republished just last year.

You write in a few different genres. Which is your favorite to write and read?

I love to write in every genre I write in. The easiest for me is probably the mystery with a bit of humor in them. The most difficult is the thriller, but that tends to be the genre where my bestsellers happen. I think the reason they tend to be more difficult is that I have to pull from dark places. I excavate a part of me with almost every book, and looking into the type of darkness that some use to murder with, is not easy.

Do you ever write things based on your own experiences?

I do. I take events that may have happened and ramp them up to next level. In my women's fiction HAPPY HOUR I look at themes around death, financial crises, aging parents, step-families, and friendships that are binding. I can relate to all of them. In DADDY'S HOME I used a personal event where I was being stalked, and I took that to an entirely new, elevated level.

What is your favorite book that you've written?

I loved writing THE CARTEL. That story after 15 years sticks with me big time. I also really loved writing THE GREY TIER. I was able to look at some of my own spiritual beliefs and explore. I was also able to use some of my own perverse humor with the character Simone, which made it fun for me to write. It's hard to choose one book. I have a different experience with each one, and so each one means something to me.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

That is sooooo tough. I have so many authors I enjoy. I always get this question, and I can never give one answer.

What are you reading now?

I am actually reading a book on horse racing right now for some research.

Can you share a little of your current WIP with us?

I have a few projects cooking. I am finishing up the sequel to my Holly Jennings' thriller DADDY'S HOME. I am co-authoring another thriller with Andrew E. Kaufman titled THE KILLING RAIN. I am also working on the sequel to THE GREY TIER. I will have a handful of new books out next year. :)

You've been kind enough to offer a giveaway of THE GREY TIER. Can you tell us a little about it?

THE GREY TIER is a little bit Sookie Stackhouse meets The Ghost Whisperer. My heroine Evie Preston moves from her small Texas town to Hollywood in order to pursue her singing career. She winds up for more than she bargained including a murder mystery, working for a super diva, dead celebrities giving her advice, and falling deeply in lust with one of those dead celebs. There is also a whole sub-story regarding Evie's ability to heal people's past traumas that comes into play. The story has romance, humor, mystery, and plenty of paranormal. I hope you will give it a try and enjoy! The book is available for Kindle, in paperback and audio as well.

Jenny Hilborne (jfhilborne) | 8 comments Nice interview.
My question for Michele is: how do you juggle writing three books at once? I tried writing two at one time and found myself confusing the characters from one book with the other. Do you keep bios and outlines for each novel as you work them?

message 5: by Michele (last edited Aug 22, 2012 02:56PM) (new)

Michele | 6 comments Hi Jenny,

I do keep bios and outlines. Then I prioritize. I know that the thriller is due in a month, but Andrew and I already started on our book THE KILLING RAIN by spending time outlining and writing some chapters to get it moving. We rotate pages back and forth on a flexible basis as we both have other projects due. With THE DARK PORTAL, which is the sequel to THE GREY TIER, I am developing the outline and I write down scenes as they come into my head.

If I am stuck with one project, I take a day and work on another one. It helps keep things moving and gets me unstuck. I guess I am sort of A.D.D. that way. :) I also write quickly. I write at least 10 pages a day, 6 days a week.

Michele | 6 comments I love writing the paranormal. What is your favorite aspect, series, authors that you enjoy in the paranormal genre?

message 14: by Nissie Lambert (new)

I can't pick a favorite series or author, Michele. But I love getting into the world that the author has created in paranormal and the characters are more times than not just spectacular. I for one get tired of "normal" at times and it's great to escape into the paranormal.

Valerie Zink | 2 comments Like Nissie, I find it hard to pick a particular series, because I read so many of them and love them all so much, but I do really enjoy Kelley Armstrong, both her YA and adult books. I also like Charlaine Harris and earlier Laurell K. Hamiliton in adult and for YA I have turned toward dystopias at present, but I want to read more paranormal so besides yours, The Vampire Academy books are on my TBR shelf!
