There are so many exciting parts in this book. Which thrilled you the most?

I particularly admired the lunar eclipse bit.

When Gagool was guiding them in the mines, it was so exiting with all the stories she was telling, and when she left them in the chamber.

The Last Stand of the Greys.Tuely outstanding writing.

when they were trapped :)

The Last Stand of the Greys

The eclipse escape.

The chapter where Allan Quartermain and his two companions come across the natives who believe they are gods grabbed me pretty good. I also liked the author's description of the trek through the desert. I'd have to say the part where the three main characters found themselves trapped in the mines was the most exhilirating. The author wrote it like he was actually there with them. This book is over 100 years old and I enjoyed it as one of the best I've read.

How delightful to come across a discussion on a novel by H. Rider Haggard. I fell in love with this author when I was quite young, and in spite of the British imperialist philosophy, and other dated notions, his novels captivated me - especially She and King Solomon's Mines. I have been inspired to root around and find my Haggard novels and treat myself to a reread.

Ditto, Last Stand of the Greys. I just finished "She" and enjoyed it, but I still think this is Haggard's best.

There were so many...how to choose! I agree that the Last Stand of the Greys was great - another scene that really captivated me was the final fight scene between King Twala and Incubu. I also love when they first discover the original Da Silvestra's body and the whole expedition through the mines at the end.

Brenda Clough Note how beautifully the work is paced. Every chapter has its set piece. Every other chapter ends in a cliff-hanger. This is because it was originally ...more

I've read so many of Haggard's novels that they have started to blur together in my head, so I can't remember if KSM is the one in which Quartermain and his friends ride a canoe or raft through an underground river. If so, that's my vote for the most exciting scene.
