Was the Headmaster an actual being or a figment of Vulkan's imagination?

I wish I could help you with that. It has been a while since I have read the book. I just wanted to add that My favorite scene in the book is the little Girl standing in the snow. The guy is straing out at Her she says "I SEEEEE you!"
Then the guys girlfriend approaches speaks some foriegn language breathes on to the window and makes the sighn of the cross. I thought that was awsome !

I believe the Headmaster is actually the Devil. Vulkan was only a kid 14 or so when he turned, so maybe a headmaster is his personification of someone with a lot of power and so thats how he sees the devil...I could be completely wrong though, heh.
I would say that the Headmaster could be the Devil or a figure similar to the Devil.
