Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I believe comparisons are odious. The obvious exapmle is Potter but it does you no justice. it makes you sound like a Rowling Wannabe which is sad. I think your book stands very well on its own merit. It shouldn't be thought of as like anything but itself.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Well, now I've finished it and it's fabulous. I always feel you have to be a better writer than average to capture a teenaged audience. They won't wait around while you slowly build backgrounds and plot elements. They want the story - in this book, they get it!
The Serpent in the Glass

I loved the influences (NO, NOT HP!) and the fact that there is plenty of scope to go further with this. I hope you're working on Book 2?

PS I loved Jessica's obsession with shopping!

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Thanks, Ignite.

I've got a number of books on the go, but book #2 isn't one of them yet (though I have a title and a story idea). I have 2 other fantasy books I'm working on - one with a 13-year-old boy and another with a 17-year-old boy, both with female counterparts of the same age. They both go much more swiftly into the action than Serpent, especially the former which - unusually for me - is written in first person.

I am finishing up two short parodies at present. There's so much I want to write, and so many ideas!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments ... so little time. Aye, tell me about it!
I didn't feel that Serpent was slow to start. I know one or two of your US reviews suggested so. They are wrong! There's nothing like self faith eh?

I rather like first person stories. I know some people don't but they are immediate.

Well, after my Serpent experience I look forward to whatever you present us with!

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments If you ever get the chance to press the "no" button under some of the mean reviews...please do ;)

I prefer third person, to write and read, but first person can work well for some stories.

message 56: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Now there's a though!

message 57: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I just did, for the ones that hadn't finished it or had gone off on a HP look-alike moan. I can't do with moaners!

message 58: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Having only read the blurb which says "school for gifted children" I'm going to leave a review complaining that your book is a clone of x-men, just to be different.

Ok, not really but I will read the book, and probably leave a review. Can't promise anything on the Harry Potter or X-men front though

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Hehe. Thanks, both. I'd have to be quite the seer to start writing a book that was a clone of HP before the first HP was published. ;)

X-Men - pfft. Not a fan. ;)

message 60: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oh ho! Well then I'm definitely having a moan about it being like X-men.

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments hehe.

Be careful, sometimes I base my characters on real people...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Wait - you mean Jud is real???

message 63: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I am? Why didn't anybody tell me?

message 64: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments She's not - she's a Disney character.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh right - I should have known.

message 66: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Some sort of pinkish Princess I reckon (don't look GL!)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well as long as she isn't covered in spinach I'll be ok...

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Next you'll be telling me pinocchio's a real boy! :)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well he was in the end. I think. Its a long time since I read it...

message 70: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm the mermaid one, we have the same hair

message 71: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments <------------- Ta da!

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Ta da? Thought it was Ariel...

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm 40% like you

message 74: by Kath (last edited Apr 11, 2012 09:13AM) (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments 50%. So-so!
Actually some I left as they were because I don't watch Dr Who OR Merlin.

Edit - Anyway, aren't you supposed to be writing? It says in the thread title!

message 75: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments One day I'll be, part of your world

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Maybe I should add a third option...

I'm actually image designing at the moment.

Jud, you lost me ;)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments 50% Wonder if thats the same 50% as Ignite.

message 78: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments And is it the same 50% as DM? Or a different 50%? Are all three of you 50% the same?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments We're all half-wits?

message 80: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Maybe, I don't know. I'm not even half a one

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments The Braindrainer Demons got you then?

message 82: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments I'm 40% too Jud :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments 60%

Seriously Darren. You need a kindle, dude.

message 84: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments 60% for me too

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments lol. I want you all to set up 10 questions, too ;)

The Kindle will be bought when my Amazon cheque comes! Besides, still got to decide which one... Touch probably...

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments The Serpent in the Glass reviewed on top children's review site by none other than Erik the Great (who is 10, by the way)... http://thiskidreviewsbooks.com/2012/0...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments What a lovely review Darren.

Eric is a clever kid!

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Indeed, he's reading Jules Verne!

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Presently rewriting some of Grimm's fairy tales for my own nefarious purposes...

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Something I'd like to do - a bit of a personal challenge - is to write in as many genres as I can. The only problem with this is I need to finish some series. Here's my thoughts so far:

+ Middle Grade fantasy - done.
* Parody of classic literature - publishing very soon
+ (younger) YA first-person fantasy - at 12k
+ (older) YA fantasy - at 30k
+ historical fiction - not started
+ suspense/thriller - not started (but got an idea)
+ fairy tales (humour) - about 25% done
+ sci-fi - not started but lots of ideas

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Well, my Pride and Prejudice parody is now being reviewed by Amazon. I hope to announce its release on Monday!

message 92: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You missed paranormal romance and chick-lit or as I like to think of it, chuck -lit (thank heaven!)

Pride and prunejuice is brilliant! I look forward to its release.

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments hehe. Prunejuice would've been a good one; though I suspect the plot may have run away with itself...

I think I might give chick-lit and romance a miss...P&P counts as romance anyway ;)

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Pride and Prejudice parody published!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Woop!

New release thread?

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Oh, yeah..I forgot about that. Doh! Will do!

message 97: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Tut! These authors. Brain the size of a planet....

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments and they ask me to write on a bit of paper...

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Talking about brains...

I can never seem to work out how to navigate around the Amazon forums. I seem to have entirely lost the Meet our Authors forum, and I cannot find anything about April Indie Authors.

I must be doing something wrong with these forums :(

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments OK, used Google to find them ;)
