Group them in pairs: (x • x) (x • x) (x • x) (x • x)
Count the pairs: 4. And that's the exponent, so it's x^4.

x^4 times itself in a radical would be x^8 and x^4 is a perfect square so you'd remove the two and end up with x^4.
