Doreen, I felt the same about the first book but loved DOTT, and I can tell you the series gets better with each book, I think. I wouldn't say the series is my all-time favorite of his novels, but it is very good. I'm on the seventh book now, The Dark Tower, which concludes the journey, and I'm glad I stuck with it.

I am reading this for the first time. I never was interested in the DT series for some reason. But a few days ago "The Gunslinger" just blew me away! And now this ...
I still at the beginning. With the drug deal in the airplane. This stuff is sooo crazy. And I love it.
Really different than the usual "easy to swallow" King. And it feels very personal because of it.

New to the group and finished The Gunslinger a few days ago. Happy my copy of The Drawing of the Three came in at the library yesterday. Started it last night and read the first chapter. My mind is blown already. I really need to pace my emotions and reactions to these books or I'll burn myself out. That first chapter is glorious, though.
I think love for Roland is more about the sense of kinship, finding a kindred spirit rather than romantic love. He sees himself in them the way a father sees himself in his children.
In Jake's case I have a working theory that Jake is the "twinner" of someone else you haven't encountered yet. That's assuming the twinner concept from The Talisman and Blackhouse carries through to this series. Which is bloody well should since they're part of the Dark Tower canon.
