Ellen Wiseman | 2 comments Hi all. Thanks for this thread! My debut novel, The Plum Tree is coming from Kensington in January 2013.

Here is the jacket copy and some advance author blurbs.

A deeply moving and masterfully written story of human resilience and enduring love, The Plum Tree follows a young German woman through the chaos of World War II and its aftermath.

“Bloom where you’re planted,” is the advice Christine Bolz receives from her beloved Oma. But seventeen-year-old domestic Christine knows there is a whole world waiting beyond her small German village. It’s a world she’s begun to glimpse through music, books—and through Isaac Bauerman, the cultured son of the wealthy Jewish family she works for.

Yet the future she and Isaac dream of sharing faces greater challenges than their difference in stations. In the fall of 1938, Germany is changing rapidly under Hitler’s regime. Anti-Jewish posters are everywhere, dissenting talk is silenced, and a new law forbids Christine from returning to her job—and from having any relationship with Isaac. In the months and years that follow, Christine will confront the Gestapo’s wrath and the horrors of Dachau, desperate to be with the man she loves, to survive—and finally, to speak out.

Set against the backdrop of the German home front, this is an unforgettable novel of courage and resolve, of the inhumanity of war, and the heartbreak and hope left in its wake.

The Plum Tree is a touching story of heroism and loss, a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of love to transcend the most unthinkable circumstances. Deft story telling and rich characters make this a highly memorable read and a worthy addition to the narratives of the Holocaust and WWII—Pam Jenoff, author of The Ambassador's Daughter

In The Plum Tree, Ellen Marie Wiseman boldly explores the complexities of the Holocaust. This novel is at times painful, but it is also a satisfying love story set against the backdrop of one of the most difficult times in human history. —T. Greenwood, author of Two Rivers

The Plum Tree is available for pre-order now, at a great price! http://www.amazon.com/Plum-Tree-Ellen...

Arthur Aachen (vicariot) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

Thanks for the invite here! I recently published a speculative fiction novel titled The Destiny Fog

Borne and Trieste are young lovers from radically different backgrounds, on a world shaped by mysterious entities known as the Guardians. These guides established a stable and prosperous path for humanity to follow, but are now gone, and the world faces its greatest crisis in history -- a catastrophic volcanic eruption that leads to famine, disease, and war.

Free sample available.

Cheers!

Patricia Graham (appalachianlass) | 3 comments My third book SOUTHERN MYSTICAL MOMENTS went to the editor today. It is scheduled to go the publisher in the second week of Sept. I am extremely happy about this book. It is an anthology of collected myths and legends that are in and around Western North Carolina.

Many readers have grown up listening to stories about bigfoot, boogie- man, and many other tales.
This book provides readers with the opportunity to read about first-hand witness accounts about these creatures they have encountered. Readers can discover the mysteries behind the Brown Mountain Lights, The Boojum, The Healer, and much more.

Stay tune for more updates

Battles and Backache by Lilian Simmonds Battles and Backache by Lilian Simmonds:

Sally is having a bad day. Her car has developed an ominous rattle, her husband Dave is in one of his “I told you so moods,” and Sally is suffering from an excruciating bout of sciatica. To make matters worse, the annual Father’s Day barbecue is looming and Sally knows that Dave’s promise of “don’t worry dear, I will do all the work,” will involve him donning his “I’m the King of the Barbecue” apron and standing in front of the outside appliance for an hour or two; performing a few tricks with some cooking tongs, looking for all the world as if he was a finalist on Master Chef.

After days of agony and very little sympathy, Sally finds help from an unexpected ally, and discovers that the challenges that come our way are often gentle nudges to move us forward into the next phase of life.

Howard Loring (howardloringgoodreadscom) | 284 comments Members, I need some technical help & here's my situation:

My new book will be the monthly giveaway for the Time Travel group in October & wanting to let the members read it for free, I put it in the Free Kindle Library, thinking this would give access to as many as possible.

Yet now I find that this arrangement is only good in the USA & I'm locked into them (Kindle) for three months.

I see elsewhere here & there across the threads that others offer a free ebook, but how do you do that?

In Smashwords you need a coupon etc. but, as I had no idea how that's done I went with Kindle, but now I'm not so sure that was the best way to proceed.

If I want to send someone an ebook should I just send a PDF file?

I was told this was not a good option as they could then send it on to others, hence denying future compensation but now I'm not sure whether this is a valid concern or not.

Any ideas?

If it's not an easy thing. perhaps you could direct me to a website that explained such a process.

Thanks.

A novelette.

Albert Tucher is the author of thirty-five published short stories and five unpublished hardboiled novels about prostitute Diana Andrews. One story, called “Bismarck Rules,” appears in the anthology The Best American Mystery Stories 2010. When Diana isn’t looking, he sometimes fits a stand alone story into his writing schedule. “A luminous talent...A keen, incisive vision into the hidden world of children as well as intimate knowledge of the secret spaces that exist between the everyday events of life. A work with a brilliant sense of story.”
~JoAnne Soper-Cook, Judge, 2010 David Adams Richards Prize

“Profound...a writer of such substance that she is obviously headed to the top echelon of writers of our time...a book of rare sensitivity and masterful creative writing [that] must surely be shared with as many friends and fellow readers as possible.”
~Grady Harp, Amazon.com Hall of Fame Reviewer, ***** (5 stars) on Amazon.com

“This isn't the invented childhood of imagination and wonderment...[here] children both corrupt and redeem: each other, family relationships and the female body.”
~Katie Hewitt, The Globe & Mail

“Loved your book; read it in one sitting.”
~Mutsumi Takahashi, Anchor, CTV News Montreal
(Interview: http://youtu.be/dyOp2wQlxvk )

“...this lovely little book, short stories about life in a family that might just resemble yours...A wonderful gift for mother's day, perhaps more long lived than the usual cut flowers.”
~Anne Lagacé Dowson, CJAD Radio

“Akerman engages with dichotomies. Childhood is that safe, magical, carefree time and place — but it’s also risky, threatening, ominous and dangerous — full of impenetrable mystery around things seen and experienced, but beyond understanding. And if it’s not too much of a simplification or stating the obvious, life and the world are not gentle on children simply for being children…If, as Dostoevsky once remarked, and as is quoted on the collection’s frontispiece, “The soul is healed by being with children,” it is the tragedy of adulthood that we become so isolated from childhood — and what children offer us. Artfully, evocatively, Beverly Akerman’s The Meaning of Children reminds us of that.”
~Darrell Squires, The Western Star

“Beverly’s background as a scientist, MSc and twenty years as a molecular researcher, inevitably spills into the stories…characters, the settings and her style. Intelligent, objective, open-minded but not clinical, her prose is refreshing and unprejudiced. Her characters are frank and genuine ...With The Meaning of Children, we get a beautifully written exposé on the meaning of life.”
~Francine Diot-Layton, The Rover

“I can't stop thinking about this book...I can't remember a book, let alone a collection of short stories, where I could identify so heavily with the emotions and feelings of the characters.”
~Martin Crosbie, author of My Temporary Life, ***** (5 stars) on Amazon.com

“Remarkable in its intensity and craft, The Meaning of Children is a book that bears discovering, and Akerman a writer to watch.”
~ Samuel Peralta, poet, author of Sonata Vampirica & other books, ***** (5 stars) on Amazon.com

Beverly’s Biography
After over two decades in molecular genetics research, Beverly Akerman realized she'd been learning more and more about less and less. Skittish at the prospect of knowing everything about nothing, she turned, for solace, to writing. Recent honours: shortlisted for Aesthetica Magazine's Creative Works Competition, winner of PWAC's 2011 Short Article Award, Pushcart Prize nominations in fiction and nonfiction. Credits include The Globe & Mail, The Hill Times, The Jewish Magazine, Maclean's, The Montreal Gazette, The National Post, The National Review of Medicine, The Toronto Star, CBC Radio One, myriad literary and scientific journals and other publications. Strangely pleased to believe she's the only Canadian writer ever to have sequenced her own DNA. http://beverlyakerman.blogspot.com The Meaning of Children by Beverly Akerman

message 1780: by Bob (new)

Bob Zeidman (zeidman) | 3 comments My novel Good Intentions was recently published and is available at http://tinyurl.com/bp7b47d. Good Intentions is about a future United States that has become the ultimate nanny state. One man, Winston Jones, is chosen by the mysterious Fairness for EveryBody Society to be the next president because he has the required makeup—ethnic, racial, religious, sexual orientation, etc.—to “fairly represent the diversity of America.” The book is his reluctant adventure to discover what America is about and how to get it back to its real values. He comes across many clashing groups including “The Documented,” a group of legal aliens that refuse to break the law and thus get no government entitlements. He also comes in contact with Radical Femlamism, a bizarre melding of Radical Feminism and Radical Islam. All along he’s tracked by the Freedman Group, a collection of “subversives” who believe in free market capitalism and secretly run businesses without government interference. These issues are particularly relevant to the upcoming presidential election and the future direction of our country. Whether you agree with the premise or not, I think you’ll find the book interesting, thought provoking, and most of all fun.

Philip Whiteland | 9 comments Fancy a spot of outright silliness? Then try this, published on 30th August:

Jambalaya by Philip Whiteland

It’s a time of Civil War; of cowboys and soldiers, riverboats and gamblers, genteel Southern Belles and dark deeds.

Celany Garden had it all – big house, doting wealthy parents and not one but two devoted lovers. So why is she being pursued by kidnappers? What has happened to her maid, and where does an Army Major called Agnes fit in? Can Celany beat the law, the army, and an enthusiastic posse in finding the answers? Everything hinges on a flatulent horse called Thunder, a General who hates loud noises and a psychopathic Marshall with a penchant for torture. Gone with the Wind was never like this!

Philip Whiteland is well known for his hilarious collections of 'nostalgedy' childhood memoirs, Steady Past Your Granny's by Philip Whiteland and Crutches For Ducks by Philip Whiteland . This is his first foray into full-length fiction (and you try saying that after a night at the pub).

message 1784: by Hank (new)

Hank Quense Any Shakespeare fans here? Well, Falstaff's Big Gamble is his worst nightmare. It takes two of the Bard's most famous plays, Hamlet and Othello, and recasts them in Gundarland. There, Hamlet becomes a dwarf and Othello a dark elf.
If that isn't bad enough, these two tragedies are now comedies with Falstaff, Shakespeare's most popular rogue, thrown in as a bonus.
Both Hamlet and Othello are plagued by the scheming Falstaff, who embezzles money from Othello. After Hamlet becomes king (with help from Falstaff) the rogue becomes the dark nemesis behind the throne.
Never read Shakespeare? Not a problem. No knowledge of Shakespeare's plays is required to enjoy this romp through the Guandarlandian countryside. Check it out.

The synopsis for Conjoined Souls:

Samantha (Sam) Brennan and Alexandra (Alex) McNulty were conjoined twins in a past life and identical twins separated at birth in this life. For ninety years, their souls had remained tethered to one another.

Days before Sam’s twentieth birthday (as well as Alex’s), Sam had ended up in a coma after becoming collateral damage of an attack on a Seattle judge.

Three years and a few months later, Alex—now a rookie police officer from Saint Louis, Missouri—gets lured into a home while being off duty and smothered by something that had a strange odor.

Sam wakes up from her coma while struggling to breath, and after realizing that she was safe in a Seattle hospital, she proclaims that she is Officer Alexandra McNulty of the Saint Louis Police Department.

As Sam’s adopted mother Pamela (Pam) Brennan attempts to convince Sam/Alex that she was Sam by showing her photos of Sam’s high school graduation and of Sam’s graduation party, Sam/Alex correctly figures out that she (while believing that she is Alex) and Sam were identical twins separated at birth, and then made a request for Pam to look up her Facebook page.

Once Pam became convinced that Sam/Alex was Alex in Sam’s body, Pam had helped Sam/Alex to get to Saint Louis so that Sam/Alex could figure out who had attacked her.
