R4: Team 3~Triple the Trouble

I read: Tender Is the Night - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Rating: 3/5
Finished: January 12th, 2013
Last year, I read and loved The Great Gatsby, so I had high hopes for Tender is the Night. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The book feels much longer than it actually is, which I think can probably be attributed to the fact that the narrative is incredibly disjointed. The story follows Dick and Nicole Diver, a wealthy American couple living in Europe in the 20s. Dick falls in "love" with Rosemary Hoyt, a young actress. They begin a short-lived affair, which causes Dick to wonder if he made a mistake in marrying Nicole. The characters aren't easy to relate with, and the only character I was able to sympathize at all with was Nicole Diver. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book for the most part, if only because of the parallels with F. Scott Fitzgerald's own life.

Jennifer it didn't let's access it so I hit the request for access. If you get a message from jfroberts001 that's me :)

I just noticed though that the paper edition I have is completely different from the Kobo edition, which is weird. It doesn't seem to be abridged or anything, just...different lol.

Jennifer, it's basically Canada's answer to the Nook lol. I always said I'd never get an eReader, but I'm kind of in love with my Kobo, haha!

Review:
I liked this book very much. There are still a lot of secrets regarding Kate, but I'll be glad to find them out in the next book. We are a bit thrown into this world, not everything is explained and you have to figure it out, but I prefer this to any info-dumping. Kate is tough, cocky, and funny. I can definitely see her becoming on of my favorite female characters. Curran, the Lord of Beasts, is a temperamental hero and a great match for Kate. The post-apocalyptic flavor of the world-building really appeals to me and I think the mixture of fantasy and sci-fi was original. There's not much romance at this point, but it's promising. It's the first book I've read by this author, and I wish I'd read it sooner.

So my items for my eyes book will be eyes, rainbow, hood and paper, unless there are other items that would work better for the team?

PS Jennifer, your items for the Rapid Reader Scavenger Hunt are brutal! The most I've found in any one book so far is two, haha!

I'm excited to start Magic Strikes after all the great things I've heard about it. I'll probably be starting it tonight.

PS Jen..."
That was my goal...muhahaha! J/K
I've managed to find a total of 5 in 2 books. The thing that shocked me was that cashmere sweater was in about 80% of the books I looked in :)

And here I thought I was being nice :P...lol. Originally I had Krispy Kreme Doughnuts instead of glazed doughnuts :)

Your list is going to give me nightmares LOL.

I read: The Sword In The Stone - T.H. Whyte
Finished: January 14th, 2013
Rating: 3.5/5
This is the first book in The Once and Future King series, and it does kind of read like a first-in-series, in that some parts seem to mostly be there to set the scene and introduce you to characters who will be more important in later books. It's the classic tale of Merlyn and King Arthur, but the first book knows him as the Wart.
The first 15 or so chapters reminded me a bit of The Graveyard Book. Each chapter was more or less isolated from the others in terms of the plot: in one chapter, Wart is turned into a fish; in the next, he might be off fighting a fairy queen with Robin Hood (or Robin Wood, as he's called in the book.) I enjoyed most of these chapters, though a few did feel overly long and a bit dull.
The last 9-10 chapters really throw things into overdrive and start leading up to the next book. Suddenly it's 7 years later, and the chapters start connecting a bit more than the previous ones. I think I preferred this part of the book, since it felt more like it was leading somewhere. Overall though, I did really enjoy this take on King Arthur's childhood, and I can't wait to read the next book!
Items to claim:
Eyes: "It looked at them with big, apprehensive eyes..." (Kobo chapter 5, pg. 28)
Rainbow: "In fact, you would have been a rainbow man to him, a beacon of flashing and radiating colours..." (Kobo chapter 5, pg. 27)
Hood: "...while Robin set his collar bone and made him a sling from the green cloth of his hood..." (Kobo chapter 12, pg. 5)
Paper: "He then demanded pencil and paper in quick succession..." (Kobo chapter 3, pg. 28)
I hope that works for rainbow! If Dawn wants more detail, I can post the whole paragraph (it talks about there being images in the seven colors of the rainbow, etc.)

I just started on Magic Strikes, but the Kate Daniels books are usually pretty quick reads (since they're impossible to put down!) so hopefully I'll finish it before the next item is called.

Here's where we stand now with what's been claimed and what's left with 2 or less:
Snow: Melanie
Mist/Fog: Sam
Rainbow: Melanie
Belt:Sam
Bra: Melanie & Sam
Hood: Jennifer
Necklace:Melanie
Elbow: Jenne & Sam
Shelf:Melanie
I have Instrument, hood, and mist this week with my shoulder book

Wow I'm surprised by this book. It was really great! Elathan is heir to the throne of the fae. He's exiled himself following the death of his cousin. He hates all humans since they killed her. Igraine is planning on ending her life when she's kidnapped by Elathan. He's decided to bind her to him as his slave. She continues to surprise him and you start to wonder who is the one bound to who. Great world building, hit romance, and great action. This book has it all. I can't wait to continue with this series!
