I grew up knowing family is paramount. I was blessed to spend time with extended family daily, not just on holidays or weekends. Because of those close-knit familial bonds, every day was full of love and laughter, food and fun.

Life took me away from that extended family for twenty years before I finally made it back. And while I'd done my best to keep the traditions alive across the miles, I realize there truly is no place like home.

Through my fiction, I share those traditions and the importance of relationships with you. Mystery or suspense, romance or mainstream, sci-fi or thriller—in my stories, family (however you define it) is paramount.

I don't really get writer's block. There are days I know what I want to say but can't figure out the right way to say it, but that's different than not knowing what to say at all. When that happens, I just write poorly. I can always clean up bad writing later. For people who don't know what to say at all? Well, I'd say write anything. Write gibberish if you have to. Eventually that will turn into crappy words, which will turn into something better. And then you'll have a story, which you can then go back and edit later. Who knows? The gibberish may end up being fodder for your next story, anyway.(less)

The answer will be different for everyone. It's probably different for me every day. But I think having a creative outlet for all the things I want to say is pretty darn satisfying.(less)

Gratitude and Greetings

Ciao, amici! Just wanted to handle a bit of business before wrapping up for the year. Annual Cookie Exchange I wanted to take a moment to thank all the bakers who participated in this year’s annual cookie exchange. Everything looks DELICIOUS! I’m so glad you shared your treats with us. I also wanted to thank … Continue reading Gratitude and Greetings Read more of this blog post »

But Not For Cruelty by BJ Bourg

I love this series. We keep learning more about the characters. Situations change, lives evolve. People move in and out. It’s a realistic portrayal of a small community, and that’s my favorite part of these books.

That said, I wouldn’t keep reading if

This latest installment in the Jake Cashen series was among my favorites. This novel leans heavily into themes of family and whether it’s defined by blood or emotional bonds.

This plot begins decades earlier with a kidnapping. Two years later, the boy

Pendergast by Douglas Preston
Rate this book

I’m not sure what I was expecting. Maybe more military experience and less first FBI case. But it makes sense that this was Pendergast’s first case, as he’s now an agent and no longer a colonel. Still, we were told a little about those days intersper ...more

Angel of Vengeance by Douglas Preston
Rate this book
Clear rating
Well, that was… let’s just say it’s a good thing “vengeance” is in the title because that’s the whole point of the story.

No Coldmoon this time, and I wasn’t convinced his case had wrapped up. So I missed that aspect. Otherwise, this one was full, ne

The Cabinet of Dr. Leng by Douglas Preston

As I expected from the last book, this one veers from believable (though technically theoretically scientifically possible… even while being completely improbable and far-fetched). Still, it was entertaining, and all the open threads are fascinating ...more

Bloodless by Douglas Preston

Clear rating
Well, I’ve given up hoping animals will be safe in this series. It breaks my heart, but they just don’t stand a good chance of making it out alive.

In this particular book, neither do a lot of people.

I’d wondered where things were going when it starte

Crooked River by Douglas Preston

Ahhh… I was so happy to see Coldmoon return. The dynamic between him and Pendergast is a joy to watch.

This was one of the more disturbing cases of the series. More than one hundred disembodied feet wash up on a small-town beach. Not just the shoes,

Verses for the Dead by Douglas Preston

Another (I’m assuming) standalone novel in the series, this one really sang. Pendergast’s new boss, an ambitious man who rigidly follows rules, wants to transfer our favorite agent so his unorthodox methods don’t derail the ADC’s career. To keep tabs ...more

City of Endless Night by Douglas Preston

This installment doesn’t belong to a smaller series inside the saga but rather is a standalone. In it, Pendergast faces a foe like none he has so far encountered.

Though this story includes gruesome deaths and a violent climax, it’s really much more
