“How Meersh the Bedeviler Lost His Toes”, a short story in the same setting that Frost would later revisit for his duology, was first published in the September 1998 issue of Asimov's Science Fiction magazine and was later included in Frost's story collection Attack of the Jazz Giants and Other Stories.
