Oh, I need to read this!
Yes, you are!!! But this is one you may one to eventually buy anyhow. I finished it last night. I will be giving it five stars.
Yeah, I am a basket-case when I love a book. I want everybody to read it. Just wait until you learn about Georges Picquart.

Oh, last time I didn't see ou 4 stars! Have you read others by the author and are they as good? I am considering Pompeii, but the theme draws me less.
I will go see if you have a review.....
After reading your review: Oh my, I couldn't stop reading, so we reacted a little bit differently. I became infatuated with Picquart. I knew a bit about Dreyfus but knew nothing about Picquart and that is the part that really drew me. No, it doesn't surprise me at all how the army did all they could to prevent the truth from coming out and how the Jews were the scapegoats! Yes, this could definitely be repeated today. I really think the author wrote the story well.

Yes, I can see how you could be infatuated,as Picquart has the qualities I most admire in people.
I've not read anything further by the author, but I will try something in a month or two. I agree the author made a very good story around the facts. I like his writing style....not too wordy or too sparing. I wish we could pick up books of this quality with every choice! If you go for Pompeii then I'd be really interested to hear what you think, but it doesn't interest me as much as novels set in France.
Julie, I am also less interested in Pompeii, the basic theme!
Laura, thanks,. I hope you like it as much as I did.
You've sold me, Chrissie, even though I'm a bit wary of Robert Harris. I liked his novel about Cicero a lot, but I was very disappointed in his novel about the code breakers of Bletchley Park. (I can't remember the name of either work!)
Maybe you guys already know about Georges Picquart?! Reading about him was wonderful. A real uplifter.
Well my review only expresses my personal reaction.
Yeah well, it was a great book, so I couldn't help but get exuberant. I know I get kicking mad at bad books and fall in love with the excellent ones.
Makes me happy you liked the review. I liked yours.
I just think of the book and think of Gerorges Picquart and I get filled with happiness.
I felt a very optimistic about the world when I read how determined he was to get to and reveal the truth.
Picking this up today based on your review. A five especially from you in a good testament. Wonderful review.
Thank you, Diane. Now I get nervous. I want you to like it as much as me. What I loved was reading about such an exceptional REAL person.
Wow, Chrissie! Great review. You actually sold me on the book before I read it, but now I have to also add it to my on deck shelf.
Lisa, I want to read another by the author so you have to let me know about Pompeii. Fatherland I cannot get in an unabridged version. That one I would prefer. I am glad you will be reading An Officer and a Spy.
I'll let you know, Chrissie, about Pompeii.
I've also wanted to read Fatherland since it was published. I hope to get to it someday.
Chrissie, I just saw this thread again. I think I told you about Pompeii. Not recommended! Very much like a soap opera. I do think it gave a good idea of what life was like for various people in that time and place and I was fascinated by the culture, especially their aqueduct system, but a non-fiction book would be better, I think.
I still want to read Fatherland.
I cannot get Fatherland but I really do not think it will fit me anyhow. I am not going to read Pompeii either. You warned me against that.

Yes, I don't think either are for you, Chrissie. Pompeii is at least a straight historical fiction novel, but not a great one. Fatherland has historical fiction components but it's really a speculative fiction book, so I wouldn't think of it for you.
Wonderful review, Chrissie! I missed it when you first wrote it. You certainly have a knack for expressing your enthusiasm and the focus of your subject.
I have been fixing errors that come to my attention! This was a marvelous book, one of the best read lest year. I have not been able to find any other by the author that I really want to read though.
Thank you again, Barbara.
I couldn't agree more. When I get fed up with the many contemporary historical fiction books that are spewed out and which totally disappoint me, I remind myself of this. As a counterweight.
This looks like a timely read. I'd not known of it prior, thanks for the terrific sales pitch, Chrissie. Audio sounds great.
It's on my Tier One shelf - I was just listening to the audio clip - but I'm really looking forward to checking this one out. All my friends' reviews on this are similar to yours, which gives me a good feeling!
I took another look and decided to request it now. On page one there is already a line worth quoting. Thanks again!
Do you recommend his others as well, Chrissie?

I have not read others. If I remember correctly they are quite different though.
OK, thanks. If I love this, I'll probably read more of his, in which case, I'll let you know if I find a gem.
