I completely agree with you. you even tried finishing it, me? I could not even get half way.
I liked them, but I can see your point. I found I had to be in certain frame of mind to enjoy them. More of a technical concern for the story than a real caring for the character. "Well, his cowardice should lead to failure and humiliation, so how will Frazier twist it, with a hint of dark humor, into a narrow escape and success?"
I guess it is best taken with a chaser of Schadenfreude.
