I've been enjoying reading your reviews - but this one really jarred.
You seem to be dissapointed with the book for not meeting your expectations, but this is an author's first novel - surely you should be approaching with an open mind, looking to see what this writer can do, rather than starting out with strongly held opinions to judge him against?
You say you 'started reading it' - but I have to wonder if you ever finished it? Did you reach the pay-off which gives the digressions into kung-fu and childhood such meaning?
I wouldn't normally challenge a review - everyone is entitled to their opinions - but having read this book and many of your other reviews, it seems a good fit for you, so I have to wonder if you just picked it up on an off-day?
