Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali My dear friend, don't put yourself through unnecessary misery. in the course of one month this year I dropped at least three books. Time is fleeting and life is short. Just file away in the "unh unh" category and burn from your memory.

Haha, if I wasn't a completionist and if this weren't from Edelweiss (I rarely get approvals from them, so I feel especially obligated to write reviews for whatever books I get from them, good or bad), I'd be tempted to put this down. I somewhat knew what I was getting into, though, so this is willingly.

Thankfully I have a few good books to look forward to once I finish this one. And I'll probably stay away from some of the more cringe worthy reads for a little while.

Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali Your remark at 75% is awesome. Even bad books have some value. Some. Some. Sometimes. ;-)
So polish up those ideas and make something more worth reading than this!

Angela Oh, no. I also have this to read via Edelweiss, and now I know that it's going to be painful for me, too. Your status updates have me extremely worried about what this will do to me once I finally read it.

I would say save yourself, but I think this is one you have to experience to judge. I really couldn't believe how far it went.

I saw Ashleigh Page's review on this a while back and curiosity became me, but now I realize just how much I regret that.

It's a shame because Echols YA books are actually quite decent.

@Khaalidah, I did so much writing last night, you would not believe. :) It was a nice alternative to this book.

How far it went in regard to what - the Native American stereotypes and what else? You said there was a sick level of perversion in one of the later scenes and that has me worried.

For the perversion, let's just say that it involves the heroine being in the presence of a character who almost raped/SA her early on in the story, and his special ability is mind reading/mind manipulation. There's some sketchy stuff that happens around that point to both the heroine and hero of this story. I read it with my jaw dropped. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to write about that section in my review without massive spoilers and without flinching.

And there's heavily loaded mental illness stereotyping to be had in this as well.

I could see points in this story where it actually could've been much better than what it was for some of the ideas, but the blatant stereotyping, the writing, the lack of flow, the actions and motivations of the characters which didn't make much sense, and the scenarios designed to keep the H/h apart, it was a mess collectively speaking.

Angela I just made the "ugggh" noise out loud while reading that. Unfortunately, this will be my first Echols read, so I hope it doesn't poison me toward her contemporary novels.

I look forward to seeing whatever you say in your review.

Rose I finally finished this review, but it was a tough one to write. Argh. Lot of ground to cover and trying to think about events that were convoluted enough to follow.

Angela Wow, this does sound like it was tough, and I don't envy the time you had to take to put your frustration into words. I know that I'll still read this because I downloaded it, but it will be far, far off in my electronic TBR pile.
