Your review made me laugh out loud...but then I started remembering that time I was forced to watch "What the Bleep do We Know" with my sister. I would have preferred the turd.
If people are sooo gullible as to believe this, i'm get rich with my snake oil as long as i market it well.
:))
Yes, people ARE that stupid to believe it. But what is even worse is that the "author" blames people for their own misfortune: you get AIDS: too bad, you were not thinking positive enough; you are a raped child: too bad, you were not thinking positively enough; your dying of famine: too bad, you were not thinkin positively enough. You get the idea. That she's getting away with it and earning millions on it beyond me. She must be the most positive thinking person in the world.
Congrats Rita and everyone else who knows this book its a piece of snake oil "philosophy" an isult to those children and adults who suffer due to NO fault of their own.But are victims of greed and evil.
This book belongs in the garbage.BTW one of their writers is in jail charged with murder of his followers in the sweat lodge.Did he attract "that" with his thoughts??? why has noone asked him?....lol...I'd love to hear his answer.
He must have not been thinking "positive".......LOL...
Thanks Jordan! :)
I haven heard of what happened to one of the contributors... Do you have a link? It could be an interesting read!
With all that;s negative in the world, it helps to have a positive influence whether real or imagined. No matter how one might feel about this book it's still not a bad idea to at least try and focus on something good rather than fall in line with the rest of humanity and add more injury. Think about it. Some of the responses I've read are nothing more than a repeat of more negativity, as if we really all could use more of that. What's wrong with trying to be different and walk to a different beat.?
I think that you missed the point Echo1265. This isn't about not wanting to be positive, but it's about how inherently wrong it is to blame the victims themselves for their own misfortune, whether they be victims of war, assault, sexual abuse, illness, etc. (which is what Rhonda Byrne does).
Echo1265 wrote: "With all that;s negative in the world, it helps to have a positive influence whether real or imagined."
First of all, I reject the notion that "imagined" positive influences are useful or good. I find everything "good" I need in the love of my wife, the faces of my children, the quiet snow on still trees, the feeling of a job well done, etc. etc. As Penn Jillette says, 'I have love, blue skies, rainbows and Hallmark cards, and that has to be enough. It has to be enough, but it's everything in the world and everything in the world is plenty for me. It seems just rude to beg the invisible for more.'
And, if you read my review carefully, I allow for the fact that positive thinking can be a good thing from, essentially, a cognitive-behavioral standpoint. What I don't truck with is that mamby-pamby wishy-washy self-indulgent thinking and whitewashing of reality is somehow helpful, useful, and morally righteous.
Great review. I totally agree with those who said that blaming the poor, the raped, the fucked over for their lot in life due to their negative thoughts is simply wrong. In fact, it's more than wrong, it's downright reprehensible.
Meanwhile, many of those duped by this nonsense continue to buy the books after all this time, not realizing or wanting to admit it just doesn't work.
@Rita ! oh my god people !What does anything you said have to do with anything !?..I'm only 15 ,probably smaller than all of you,but for sure, you haven't understood a word of what the book meant.
Carla wrote: "@Rita ! oh my god people !What does anything you said have to do with anything !?..I'm only 15 ,probably smaller than all of you,but for sure, you haven't understood a word of what the book meant."
If I haven't understood "a single word of what the book meant," then I'm just this side of certain that it's a failing of the writer and not my reading comprehension.
That being said, to my mind the book has one thing to say and does it ad nauseum and without supporting documentation or falsifiable claims and in the face of real suffering and victims who deserve a better message than, "wish/imagine/delude harder."
However, I would appreciate being enlightened if you have the competence, articulacy, and stamina.
Color me skeptical on two of the three; I'll let you guess which.
Carla, there's no such thing as law of attraction. There's no secret. The book is not about positive thinking either.
It's tempting to want to believe, because it gives hope that we can all have super lives like the rich and famous. But ask yourself this - if it really worked, why would you need to go to school? You could just attract everything you need. If it really worked, why do so many people still need to get up and go to jobs they dislike each day?
Because there's no such thing, and t doesn't work.
You're only 15. I highly suggest you throw this book away, and forget this line of thinking entirely.
The secret is not a secret. The ancient text it comes from is my bible The Torah, and seeing as I know who that comes from I am going with that. It comes from Kabbalah.
I believe in all the secret book says,if u just look carefully u will understand. First u should have a strong belief in it , then imagin sth with great details. Thats all
what you readiky think,it makes a pattern of thinking, that pattern of thinking deepen you in your desire, deep desire strenthen will power, will power make you to invest your 100% in work.every action have definite reaction i.e to say 100%concentration in work lead 100% result means you wilk get what you prefer more in your thinking. My suggestion is this that if do not get result yet you should not leave your hand from positive thinking

But, corporatism is the religion and profit *is* the salvation, right? That's what I took away from The Secret at least...
I actually thought it was satire on the gullible and vulnerable. I never knew people would take 'The Onion' as 'BBC'.
Well, I haven't read the book. But I CAN say this: The comments themselves have made for a memorable and chuckle-filled read!
I read this book when it was being touted as a must read for self improvement a number of years ago- I really can not say it left me with any memorable life lessons- I am going to reread to see if upon a 2nd reading there is any take away message.
Caryl wrote: "...I am going to reread to see if upon a 2nd reading there is any take away message."
There but for the grace of Ahura Mazda go thee.
The author was an idiot and let's people believe all they have to do in life is smile and wish for something and they will received it. In a way, she is right. Completely right. She just goes about it wrong. Energy vibrates you should all know that. Our thoughts are energy.
etc etc, have an open mind and try it for yourselves. It worked for me all the time. Don't call people stupid because they've tried something that works for them or they believe in something that makes sense to them. Some of you people are extremely rude and closed minded. It's not the author or the readers it's you and your self victimising. "It's never my fault bad things happen. It's everyone else."
Mck wrote: "In a way, she is right. Completely right...Don't call people stupid because they've tried something that works for them or they believe in something that makes sense to them. Some of you people are extremely rude and closed minded."
1. I certainly haven't called people stupid. I've called their assertions out in the absence of data or facts and will continue to do so given that I honestly think this type of magical thinking is existentially dangerous.
2. In my original review I allowed for the fact that, "thinking positively will lead to success because your energy and focus will follow and, in turn, develop into what you hope for," so don't come at me as closed-minded or dismissing that principle.
My fault is with this author's premise that thinking and wishing hard enough makes a thing ultimately come true because that's demonstrably not the case. Our brains running on or our thoughts being 'energy' has no verifiable or non-verifiable impact on our success or the universe and it's useless and borderline irresponsible to try and convince people otherwise. Our actions do, however, and if you channel your thoughts and focus in positive directions then you're more likely to act in those ways but don't pretend the universe is granting me my fairy tale wishes; it insults me and it should insult you as well.
EDIT: I did sort of insult Carla above so that's a somewhat fair complaint Mck makes. But, in my defense, the 15-year-old totally started it! (/s)
I actually think this book was good. If you haven't seen the documentary, see it. And you guys should be nice and not call the author an idiot or talk about the book in such a bad way. I did not like the way your review was written Gabriel.
I tried to watch the "documentary" as well and had to give it up due to the nonsensical claptrap. I appreciate that my review may be too harshly worded or crass for some but I stand by the conclusion: this book and its concepts are misleading and borderline dangerous because they substitute resolve and effort with magical thinking. It can die in a damned dumpster fire flung at the sun.
The best self help book is "7 habits of highly effective people".. do try it n post a review for that. Would like to hear what you say about it.
Deepika wrote: "The best self help book is "7 habits of highly effective people".. do try it n post a review for that. Would like to hear what you say about it."
Hey Deepika, thanks for reading this review. I've read '7 Habits...' and think, all-in-all, it's a very practical and useful approach to establishing your core principles and goals and then executing continual improvement in one's life to actualize them.
Good idea about writing a review of it; I'll have to do that soon.
Sheyda wrote: "... consistently taking action ...!"
And there's the problem I have with this garbage pile of a book, she doesn't advocate taking action, much less consistently. She just asserts 'believe harder and attraction will follow' and, sorry, that crap just ain't fit to print.
If you want a book about how to affect change in the world through action motivated by positive thinking, this isn't it.
I must say that your review made me laugh so hard! I’m in middle of reading the book and have formed an unfavorable opinion so far, but I’m only 20% in. I’m having a hard time accepting the assertion that bad things happen to people because they sent a message to the universe and basically brought it upon themselves. So all the people in the towers on 9/11 set forth in motion this terrorist act that killed them? What about this idea: there are some fucked up people doing some fucked up shit in this beautiful but broken world. I just don’t agree with the premise that your life will be all good all the time. Not with other people exercising their free will to do otherwise. That’s my problem with this book so far. I agree with being mindful of thoughts and that positivity goes a long way. What you put your energy towards is what will manifest in your life. What you reap, you sow. I agree with all that. What about innocent kids who are abused/neglected from time they are born? How could they have set the abuse into motion?
For each it's own, I have read and practiced The Secret and The Magic Work Book . I've added the practices in my life. And like I said for each it's own. I stayed positive and OMG!!! I CAN TRULY SAY I'VE HAD OVER 20 MIRACLES AND COULD HAVE HAD MORE, IVE HAD NEGATIVE PEOPLE WITH NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AROUND ME, BUT GOT MYSELF BACK ON TRACK AND CONTINUED BEING POSITIVE AND LEARNED TO IGNORE THEM . ONCE THEY SAW MY RESULTS THEY BEGAN TO FOLLOW. STAYING POSITIVE AND PRACTICING GRATITUDE FOR EVERYTHING AND ANY NEGATIVE SITUATION I TRIED TO FIND SOMETHING GOOD AND THAT THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON,SO A LESSON TAUGHT MAYBE THE REASON AND LEARN FROM IT. WE ALL HAVE A PURPOSE ON EARTH. GRATITUDE IS THE KEY FOR ME. I'M NOT BAD MOUTHING ANYONE. DO YOU!!!
