message 1: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thank you for sharing those reflections, RK-ique. It is always a balance, isn't it? The dilemma between wanting to be part ofa community and wanting to be alone. In December, I always feel like drowning - reacting to all the cheerfulness with inner anger. But I hide it behind sarcasm ;-)

withdrawn So true Lisa. Unfortunately, my sarcasm has brought the wrath of my family down upon my head. (All I said was that I would prefer to go on a holiday to a Muslim country for the month.)

Ilse It is in a strange way reassuring you write this book made you feel uncomfortable, RK-îsme, as this is what I vaguely expect from this novel when I'll get to read it. I will keep in mind not to read it in the dreadful December month (I couldn't but chuckle at your sarcasm).

withdrawn Thanks for your thoughts Ilse. Dazai was a writer who was never comfortable in his own skin, as you know. I suspect that he transmitted this discomfort in all of his stories. (And, of course, his daughter seems to be continuing the family tradition.)

withdrawn Good point Travelin. He’s a nice guy but doesn’t read others well. This inability means that he is incapable of aligning himself with others. He’s alienated. But nice.
