B0nnie What a great endorsement: warmly humanist, inviting, engaging characters. Excellent review Megan, I'm putting this on my to read list for sure.

Thanks, Bonnie! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

mark monday i just finished this one yesterday. very enjoyable. i think your first paragraph pretty much sums up my experience. my gosh, that opening chapter was so surprisingly moving. and then that later part where SPOILER is asking the protagonist questions about her former life. that was so tender and wistful... and in a military scifi novel! nice.

I know! It was not in any way what I expected to get out of the book, but it was such a pleasant surprise to have such well-drawn and compelling characters.

Clouds I've not read any Scalzi yet, but this doesn't sound like a bad place to start if the urge takes me :-)

Megan Baxter It was where I started with his books, and I really enjoyed it. I have the second book out from the library, but I haven't started it yet. I've heard it's not as good, but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless.

Michael Glad you found some good enjoyment with this one. And got that friendly welcome feeling from entering his books. He seems quite humane himself and wears that outlook on his sleeve in his blog (which he cites as the oldest on the Internet: http://whatever.scalzi.com/

The buzz there is of the new Hugo Award nominations, for which Scazi's "Redshirts" is on the slate. He's humble enough to recognize the oddity of having his comic work in the line-up.

In many ways, Old Man's War is a riff on or extrapolation of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Better words than "rip off". "Homage" comes to mind too.

Wanda Pedersen Having read a couple of Scalzi's other works and being a regular reader of his blog, I am looking forward to OMW. Thanks for a great review (as usual).

Megan Baxter Thanks, Michael and Wanda. I haven't read Redshirts yet, but I am sure I will get to it!

Yeah, it doesn't feel like a rip off - the book quite clearly wears its influences on its sleeve.

I think you will enjoy it, Wanda!
