I went a different route with ERB and read the Tarzan books as a kid. Even then, I knew that early 20th-century pulp fiction was exactly that, pulp, and that views of women and blacks (and Germans) were influenced by the author's life and time. I didn't take it seriously as a 12-year-old, and hope that no one ever does. It was still loads of fun.
