Love this review! I’m returning my book which I bought yesterday. I’m just not wanting to read fiction that is so heavy in politics. Just like you, I like to read and loose myself in stories to forget the negativity all around. Thanks for such great review!
It's hard to take King's political opinions (or commentary) genuinely when he spent a majority of his career making overweight people and unattractive women a punchline. I have my place for him, but it's not as a critical thinker about current issues. Great Tremblay reference. Thank you for your honest review!

And if it is going to have a personal, political agenda, can it at least have some well developed plot and characters so that it's not the only detail I remember? Gah. What a waste. Seriously spend your book budget on anything else. Can I recommend Halcyon by Rio Youers?

I didn't even think about that. You are spot on. Great observation.
Oh, I'll read it, but I already know I'll be pissed off doing it because I thought even Tremblay went a little over the top in The Cabin at the End of the World.
So far, Sadie and I have agreed on every book but one that we've both read--so I trust her opinion on this one. I'll wait for it to hit Kindle Unlimited or pick it up at the library. Uncle Steve's got enough of my money, I'm not paying him for his politics or his hyper-political correctness.
Great review. Although I disagree. I find myself as a middle of the road kind of guy and was concerned about the political si D e of this story because that was all I was hearing about before the book came out. As I said in your Instagram review I didn't really find it that political. As far as the characters yes they were your typical stereotypes but in this case for me I thought it worked. I agree that sometimes his political beliefs are over bearing to some of his stories but for me not this one. I too read to get away from all the nonsense in this world. Not once when I was reading this did I think he had crossed over into over politicized crap. He has been critical of other Presidents in his stories through the years. Yes even Democrats. Again I like your review of this book. This seems to be a love it or hate it book with very little middle ground.

Well, I appreciate your candor on Tremblay. Honestly, if I thought this book had any redeeming qualities, I would have said as much. Maybe a little of the kindness and overall lightness of the ending saved it from being a one star or DNF
I’m with Dan on Tremblay’s Cabin. That book had real potential. King seems to be more miss than hit, these days. Good and honest review.
Yeah... This wasn’t as good as I was hoping it would be. Especially coming off of a good high from The Outsider, this was a huge step backwards. Glad I just borrowed it from the library.
Now I'm questioning my star rating, because I am feeling this review. You basically summed up perfectly all the problems I had. Why did I give it 4 stars?!? I'm gonna change it and write my review.
You pretty much nailed everything I didn’t like about this book. Disappointing as I usually really love his work.
Just posted my review. i thought this was a wonderfully uplifting piece of fiction. A 5-star gem in my eyes.
I'm sorry you were disappointed. I loved it. I've been going through some anxiety and sadness in my life lately and sometimes I just need a sweet uplifting story. Elevation was that for me and so much more. Was it cliche'? Maybe...but that's okay. We live in a sometimes cliche' world and with people who behave cliche.'
I 100% agree, except for the thoughts on the Tremblay, which I’ve not read.
This one felt like a lecture on tolerance, and even the predicament the main character finds himself in, and the general concept of rising above it all, felt so cliched and heavy-handed that I cringe a little thinking back over it.
King’s at his best when he puts characters into a situation, then sits back to see what happens next.
Generally, there’s a few plot twists and surprises and the Reader can’t accurately predict how the story will end.
Honestly, with this book, I really didn’t care what happened to any of them.
I agree with you. Everything just seemed to go too well - him making friends with the neighbors and having their weekly meetings. Not a lot of tension in this one. I agree with you that King's political references have become too overt and "Trumpian" isn't going to age well at all, but I think Joe Hill actually does a pretty good job weaving in social commentary with his stories most of the time.
The legs!!! Always with the legs. And even though I’m not quite the best runner out there, I do know that not that many people would be dropping like flies in the middle or near the end of a 12k!!! That’s just a bit over 6-7 miles. Maybe if he was describing a half marathon would it be more believable.
Could not have put it better myself. This was a huge disappointment; especially after the Outsider, which I absolutely loved. It's a shame when someone's need to share their political opinions gets in the way of good story telling.

I'm not sure this is a love it or hate it kind of book. I hate to sound judgy but I'm skeptical of anyone's taste who loves this book. I'm serious.

Yes! And King is fully capable of hiding the politics in the story--we've seen him do it! This felt hurried and forced-to get this book out during a sensitive time frame.

I'm sorry but King really showed his age with this one-it was written like there was a white, heterosexual, older male behind the story.

On the Joe Hill thing, his short story in Fight or Flight was just awful in my opinion, did you read that one?

Good point for A cabin at the end of the world. It was so well written and the reality of it was just flawless.
Wow, this review is spot-on in terms of all the things that bugged me too. Especially the leg thing. I’m a beginner King reader and it’s not looking good. I honestly like the cover better than the story.

Oh, King is SOOOOOO much better than this book. I recommend: The Shining, Salem's Lot, Misery or Pet Sem
