*doubles over in pain* CALEB LOTR IS MY FAVORITE HOW DARE YOU lol I'm kidding I know exactly how you're feeling. YOU WILL LOVE THAT MUSICAL I LINKED IN MY REVIEW OMG if you have time you should watch it it's so excellent! I recommended it to Celeste too & she loved itttttt *sobs*
Excellent review, Mary, though disheartening. I'd like read all the fantasy texts you mentioned--The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Alice In Wonderland and this one--but expect that those trees have been picked clean by 100 years of film, television and other media to the point where little that's compelling is left.
Thank you so much Joe! Truly that's a great way to say it. I'm reading these mostly out of respect for the source material but it does feel rather lackluster now that they've been reworked so many times!
Why thank you Craig! I hadn't ever read this before either! In fact I didn't know it was a series until just the other day lol
Thank you so much Alex! I've never read The Color Purple either but I also have never seen the movie so I'm hoping I don't have the same feelings. THE TEETH WERE REALLY WEIRD! Also, no I haven't! In fact I decided specifically to read this first before Tiger Lily! I'm really excited about that one!
Great review! I've never read this book, or seen the adaptation, but I get what you mean. Sometimes, people really do manage to take an original and make it better over the years.
Alex for some reason I think this wasn't supposed to be a cute book but we've all been affected by Disney & society's adaption of Peter that when we view the story for what it is we're like "oh" lol. But I agree the teeth were weird af lol
Omg Alex yes!! Cinderella & The Fox & the Hound & Sleeping Beauty & The Little Mermaid are all fucking W E I R D lol. I don't know if the original stories were meant for children tho were they? If so that's hella strange 😂😂😂
Alex I'm pretty sure The little mermaid is in excruciating pain when she obtains her legs & does end up dying of a broken heart in the end. & omg the sleeping beauty one was so weird like who even conceives this shit lol

lol I jumped the gun the first time when I was attacked by my dog and child. Great Review Mary! I had this happen to me with a few books. Color Purple was one of them. It has been so long since I watched Peter Pan, so I just love the story again. Weirded me out about the teeth. I never watched that adaptation though. I should! I miss flying to Neverland. Second Star on the Right and Straight on til morning. Have you read Tiger Lily?

All I was thinking the whole time why focus the teeth. I understand he is a child. It doesn't help that teeth gross me out. I thought Tiger Lily was really cute, and creatively done. I hope you enjoy that one.

As I recall The Pirates are creepers in Tiger Lily.

Lol. A lot of Disney movies come from creepy stories. Cinderella was dark. I read somewhere that Sleeping Beauty is a very strange and dark book. I love my Disney classics, but they have some creepy origins. Kind of weird to think children use to read this. They were some strong little kids. lol I would have nightmares.

I only assume since they are fairy tales. A lot of Brother Grimm's stuff is dark. I read a few of their fairy tales, and if I read them when I was younger I would have nightmares. It probably kept the kids well behaved. Hmmm. I should use this to keep my children behaved.
I forgot about Little Mermaid. lol. Did she die? I know she didn't get Eric. When I read an article on Sleeping Beauty, I was like "what the fuck!" My childhood is ruined.

But I also agree the your cousin hit the nail on the head. I have similar thoughts with LotR. I read the Sword of Shannara first and fell in love with fantasy. Its a rip off of LotR but I read it first, so LotR was the rip off in my mind. Still fantastic, but you understand I think.
