I want to read this but I'm sure it'll anger me, a lot, for a long time.
If you are smart - and I know you are - this will make you burn with righteous anger. But, that's a good thing. More people should have seen this coming, gotten angry, and taken steps to prevent the Drumpftastrophe. Just look how grassroots activism succeeded in killing "Repeal and replace". This is an important read to see under the rhetoric, all the shit that Fox&Friends would rather you be ignorant of.
You will also perhaps be surprised (at least I was but then I don't live in the US) at the demographics of fans of Drumpf's reality show we're incredibly progressive (unfortunately, becoming a candidate his inner racist misogynist came shining through) and that Bannon waged a war with Fox News during the campaign (which he obviously won)
Want to read this but also terrified of what will happen to this country under his 'leadership'. Writing that makes me want to vomit!
I had the dry heaves reading it. But, trust me, knowledge is more powerful than ignorance. Only by understanding how this Drumpftastrophe tool shape can we prevent it from happening again. Also, the bool really does explain where Drumpf's "fake news" comes from

I...I watched The Apprentice, with Trump, and actually enjoyed it and I consider myself progressive so I am not entirely surprised. But I never took it seriously, it was more of a comedy show as far as I was concerned and still, I look back at that time and feel nothing but shame.
And you are absolutely right, knoweldge is the only actual weapon one can use against those who are devoted to destroying so much that is good in the world.
Once I recovered from Trump's win- and I have a small breakdown when it happened- my first instinct was indeed to read anything that could explain how it had come about. My first pick was The Party of Fear: From Nativist Movements to the New Right in American History, which is only loosely related but still.
Yes, I believe I will read this one.
Looking for that one you suggested, thanks. I admit to not leaving my couch the day after the Election
So many gullibles will be fantasizing about Trump's wonders, for the rest of their lives in denial about being conned.
A recent comment that I found on my Pinterest History A.D. section, under a photo I have of Obama:
lying, foreign national, narcissistic,psychopath.. Congratulations..you really pick a winner..'useful-idiot!'
Wait...wasn't he describing the current president? lol
What I couldn't copy was the doctored 'artwork' of a horned demon with Obama's face. Ah...America's right-wing at its finest. lol
Terrific review, Michael, although (like others have written) I don't know if I can bear to read this right now. I'm already so sick over what's going on, the sheer evil of it coupled with stupidity.
Still, your review may have tipped the balance for me.
And what is it with Bannon's insane attachment to this myth of the historical cycle? We have lunatics (horrible ones) running the show.
Excellent review. I keep thinking it's a really bad dream I cannot seem to wake from. Oh that it was only a figment of my imagination.
So where does this 'fake news' come from? Do you mean he just gets it from Fox News, who get it from RT (formerly RussiaToday) and alt-right forums and sites like Breitbart?
I think the concept of it comes from Soviet Russia disinformation and misinformation campaigns. Does the book mention that?
Thanks Jennifer.
@Adam, no, he talks about the Cambridge Analytics and how it was able pretend to be a real news source while taking items out of context and targeting certain audiences. Here's a Guardian article talking about the same topic.
Ah interesting. Thanks.
Had just read http://www.theage.com.au/good-weekend...
and the London preppy boy arts-degreed elitist lad that runs it now is notoriously private and paranoid. For some reason I assumed they would all be science and math types from working class families wanting to change the elite establishment. Guess the Bloomberg articles I read around the election didn't give that impression. Bloomberg also had an article on Mercers. Great reads.
They were from BW. https://www.bloomberg.com/search?quer...

The angry forgotten majority of blue collar whites really backed Trump 'bigly'. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...
I think that article (or next) mentions either paid boosting of fake news on FB and or the voter suppression of lefties/Clinton-leaning swing-voters, clever and wild.
Been quite a few articles on CA.

The Texas based web developer Brad Pascarle (sp?) was quite interesting. The tweeting during debates was clever optimisation of the emotion and message that Clinton is a crook etc.
Though data didn't really win it (I think Clinton's arrogance & complacency lost it) this article throws cold water on CA, funnily enough by a Russian, so grain of salt https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articl...
Fascinating one on Mercer's tech corp & retiree pension plan/hedge fund Renaissance & Medallion.

Massive returns, some years of 100%.
Quite a few dozen books on quants. Too little time. Maybe an AI to read them all for me and summarise Cliff Notes of what I need to know would be good.
Devil's Bargain, I'd argue, is a kind of Cliff Notes the whole Drumpf campaign. I agree that HRC was a poor candidate compared to Sanders in terms of mobilizing the working class vote, but she still won the popular vote and the targeting of electoral vote-sensitive areas in swing states feels less like conspiracy theory to me than actual practice. Note that Kelleyanne "I wouldn't know the truth if it hit me in the face" Conway was a pollster and perhaps was the leaker of the targeting data to the Russian hackers.
Trump, mysteriously still holds to a 40% +/- approval rating(all Republican). If the electorate in this country were a bit better educated this would be down where it ought to be at about 15-20% We ARE a confederacy of dunces!
True. But she lost the states that the Dems traditionally won, she neglected them. She thought she had them in the bag. Her campaign was that Trump is unfit, which only broadcast her lack of insight in herself. Sure she was experienced, but as Trump said in the debate, it's bad experience. The first 100 days and even year of Clinton 42 was pretty chaotic, amateurish and mad. So perhaps Trump will rein in his massive ego and thin skin insecurities and start to lead and govern well. It's very doubtful though, it's difficult even with psychotherapy, of which he needs heaps. His hyperbole and need to humiliate others just isn't helping. It really feels like 'The Apprentice D.C.'
Not sure about the vote-sensitive areas thing, I'm Australian. I wouldn't be surprised if that occurred, there are just too many small smoke signals at various times and places for there not to be some Russian collusion. Heck they even admitted it after nearly a year of rumours and speculation. Putin and FSB are weak and illegitimate so must resort to disinfo and kompramat for their survival. They played both sides, and then blackmail them to remove the sanctions etc or else they'll reveal that they helped them. Carrot & stick. Win-win.
All I know is that Trump campaigned in blue-collar states a lot and they embraced him as they felt he got them. Of course it's all BS now, they got suckered. Who ever is the challenger in 2020 just needs to ask 'Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?' and I doubt they would be and will stay home on November 4th. Or go to a Bernie Sanders type candidate.
Sanders would have been a more correct choice for lack of a better term. The right policies for the time. Trump has turned out to be one of the worst choices, though I wonder how Clinton Inc, and Bill would be in a very self-enriching '3rd term'. I wonder if they would have dealt with DPRK and China by now. If Trump does soon then he'll have some redeeming value in my opinion.
The Electoral College is the system to prevent populism. We don't want that, that could lead to nationalism and just look at China, India, Russia etc it doesn't work and will have bad consequences. Trump is massively bruised from not winning the popular vote too. Or his ego/psyche. If only he could get over the fact that not everyone loves him like he loves himself then he might be able to focus and save his administration from being the worst ever.
I have seen no indication so far that Trump has even the slightest ability to look at himself honestly and make positive changes. It ain't happenin' ... I hope we can survive it.
Same. I'm just seeking some long-odds fantasy that something, anything will change him. They say it's a humbling experience.
I'm doubtful but hopeful. The fake TIME mag cover that Joe & Mika mocked is a classic case. I wonder if the next ego-bruising (or in his case complete and utter humiliation, the shattering of his perceived esteem and security much like a when a child runs to his mother for a hug) will make him ponder and not react. Or react less. Not overreact.
And who knows, maybe just focusing on leading and not image protection and media fascination that he's had for the last 50 years will change him. Long odds, very long odds but it's not impossible.
Whilst Ivanka and Jared are there as yes men to nurse his wounds all the time, it'll never change.
I actually liked Anthony Scaramucci for a second. He spoke his mind and wanted to get stuff done. But as soon as I stopped laughing and realised he was just another sycophant I changed to cringing at what a massive mess this all us. [The split-screen video of his hand gestures side by side to his then-beloved boss was very telling after it was shockingly funny].
Question now is will Bannon be more and more like Karl Rove was to Bush?
Near perfect, description and Review Michael! I said this book will expedite the departure of Bannon back in July 31, (Its on my Instagram post lol) and it confirmed all the dots some of us connected and suspicions were not product of paranoid or faulty reasoning like so many others had us believe. It was never "all in our mind" but in our collective reasoning.
It is important particularly in understanding why he joined the Drumpf campaign and maybe for what damage he can do now that he has left
Thanks also Mike,, Adam and Edwin. I worry now about what information Bannon left with after his quitting/dismissal from the WH and how he will weaponize it.

That's the scary part!!, Yet a career Agency/DC seasoned vet like Comey, whose discretion is legendary, are under scrutiny by the far right. The Irony.

Bannon may have helped get him in to the WH after he failed with Pailin, but not in the way Rove did with Bush 43. Bannon is noooo Karl Rove; he lacks the erudition, sophistication, self-regulation etc. "The Slob" does have a preternatural ability to see opportunity and how to timely seize tho, will give Bannon that.
Granted! Hardly reassuring to see the Slob happily back at Breitbart with the billionaire's money and god knows what information taken as he left the WH

::stomach begins to unsettle:: Anxiety sets in...TY Michael :( Lol.
Well you didn’t miss a beat Michael , so why don’t we admit that politics is dirty, and money governs the whole discussion of motive! What the left has foisted on the American people is next to ethnic cleansing of the original American way of life with all its faults
Umm, I think the choice of words "ethnic cleansing" is highly inappropriate (smells of Kosovo which as far as I recall NEVER happened on American soil) and if anything, the "left" is inclusive of all ethnic flavors and variations, so I honestly have no clue of what you are referring to.
Yes, politics is dirty on both sides, but that does not excuse the manipulation of data by Cambridge Analytica for nefarious purposes nor the collusion that has now been proven to have occurred between the Drumpf campaign and the Kremlin.
Great Review Michael. I'll add this to my list of books I need to read but am afraid to.
I've the comments here and it's embarrassing that even outside of America you see what a mess we are in.
I can't even watch news right now because I have a Pavlovian heave response to the Cheeto's voice.
I do take heart though, the DNC is still a mess but local activism is blocking the idiot and GOP sychophants as much as possible. Our 'leaders' seem to forget more voted against him than for him.
I discovered last January 2017 that the only way I could cope with this disaster was to never watch any videos of the Mango Mussolini, and to limit myself to 15 minutes of text and still pictures twice a day. This actually works pretty well.
LOL! Great advice William!
Beth, I just hope Mueller hurries up and rico's the lot of them.
Sure will be interesting to find out what Bannon spills to Mueller&Co after being shat out by Drumpf and the Koch brothers...
Thanks Norma. To be honest, I haven't put Fire and Fury on my TBR because rather than in-depth reporting like in this book, my impression from the media tour was that F&F was hearsay and overheard conversations...if you tell me I am wrong...
I completely loved your review.
When you stated that we are "living in a dystopia where populist ideals and alt-right fundamentals are driving public opinion", I could not agree more and I could not have used better words.
Donald Trump is a deep embarrassment to the US (and the human species in general, when we have such an intellectual midget and emotionally under-developed clown at the helm of the most powerful nation on Earth).
Well, we have to wait until Tuesday, November 3, 2020 for this madness to end. Hoping, of course, that Trump will not cause too much further damage in the meanwhile. Cross fingers.
