that was my problem with the book also I could not really like Helena. She was distant, cold, and it took her mother's death and several years before she realized how much her mother did for her and loved her. Helena was not a likeable heroine.

I completely agree with you, Jodell. Although I couldn't hold her lack of appreciation for her mother against her. After all, she didn't have any understanding of her mother's situation until much later in life. Also, her mother was forced into motherhood and wasn't exactly up for it. She was just a child herself and in a terrifying situation. I just felt sad for both of them, but couldn't really connect. :) xoxo

For those who liked this book, try “The Great Alone”. Very similar.

Did my previous comment go through? If not, I’d said that those who liked The Marsh King’s Daughter would definitely like The Great Alone.

This is another like The Marsh Kings Daughter, and She rides shotgun. I loved all three for different reasons
