Al Gore is also obsessed with Strauss & Howe's Generations, so I take this review with a grain of salt (just as I take the Strauss-Howe Generational Theory with a grain of salt). I see their work as intriguing and enlightening. I am an eternal optimist and, as such, I read these books through that lens. My takeaways from The Fourth Turning and Generations are to be hopeful of the Millennials getting older and I am holding out hope that real civic change will come when the maturation process has happened and a timely crisis unfolds. That crisis may well be a Trump presidency and its aftermath, who knows. In sum, I just wanted to point out that I believe anyone could read this book and use the information to fan their own confirmation bias, so perhaps we shouldn't avoid reading this just because Steve Bannon leans on this theory. Let me know if you disagree!
"I didn't read this book nor will I because someone told me that they think this way and I don't think this way and now I am compelled to let everyone know how triggered I am."
Did that about sum you up, Maru?
Kenneth: I feel the same way as you. I think reading the book is a way disect historical events without assuming they will always turn out the way the authors lead you to believe.
No one is cheering a collapse. Written in 1997, it's accuracy in seeing patterns in the global psyche is noteworthy. You insult many with a very narrow view, becoming the thing you dislike. I hope you see, we are all in this together. :)
You haven't attacked the argument. This is pure propaganda. You haven't even mentioned one iota of the argument.
I don't think you even read the book. You just wanted to complain about someone who liked this book. Your review is very selfish, please grow up.
Wow - and you even warn us about the consequences of giving a book 5 stars... think of the children!
Oh! You hate Trump and you hate Bannon! So very stunning and brave of you to stand up and be counted in your Leftist cult echo chamber.
[slow golf clap]
Just a whiny liberal mad that bannon likes the book you didnt even give this book a review you’re just plagued with TDS (Trump
derangement syndrome)
As a current 30-year military veteran and 25-year educator, I find Strauss and Howe to be spot on with their predictive analysis of the cycles of generational history. I promote this book to all as a terrific guide to understanding American socio-political culture in the present and future.
Maru Kun et. al., try reading these books from a moderate point of view without personal, social, or political bias. You could do some homework by reading the precursor text; Generations: History of America's Future, and ask the authors themselves IN the context of the time they wrote the book as these interviewers do:

It may be a "fright" for those blind to the context of societal changes over the past 40 years or a wake-up call for those open-minded enough to see it. These authors' works could be the future of how we attempt to teach history to generations of folks disconnected from their own history and NOT interested in the lessons history have to teach us.
This is an excellent book if you use critical thinking, perspective of when it was written and by who, and you are from an immigrant family. Written in 1996, it filled with hope and a euphoric view of our elders. And does not take into account the selfishness of Americans, particularly the Boomer Generation. However the dire warnings of how destructive the Boomers can (and have proven to) be, have sadly come to pass.
I think it shows the signs were there, but America failed to meet the issues. And now we're doomed.
I recommend it.
I didn't think very highly of Steve Bannon before, but after reading your glowing review I now realize that I need to pay more attention to his work. Thank you.
Well… that review aged well — since Trump was the only President in modern history to keep the US out of all major armed conflicts throughout the world…
So this book should be burned because vile people/person read it, understood the trend, and took advantage of it to turn the tide to his wants? dumb logic, pure idiocy is just too much.
It’s currently 2022, our third year into the pandemic. Russia and the Ukraine are still at war, China is asserting itself aggressively, and the US is led by a man who does NOT inspire confidence. Strauss and Howe have never been more important.
Looks like biden is more likely to bring us to war than trump. Remember, trump de-escalated tensions with russia and north korea. The fourth turning probably already happened starting with 9/11/01. And the republican president at the time had nothing to do with those attacks, unless you think it was an inside job, which might be the case. But the war in the middle east probably would have been started by any president at that time, no matter what party they were. Because no president is just going to do nothing when there is an alleged attack on our country by foreigners.
You're the fool. But... at least you aren't an ignorant fool. You read this book but... You're still stuck inside the matrix obviously so stuck in your ego identity that you trust the mainstream media and all it says about Trump. Now, don't get me wrong I trust no one (including Trump) but he's not political establishment. He won because Clinton's courrupt election machine didn't count on a FED UP POPULOUS of awakened people back to the 60s, 9/11, Etc... who was voting Trump as a rebellion to establishment politics. What this country and the world needs is true sovereignty but that requires personal responsibility and too many people like clinging to the systems that keep them enslaved. One thing the last 51 years of my life has taught me is that the world is what we make of it with each one of our choices. It's alllllll a spiritual game. ✨️
Man talk about under the influence of media hysteria. Christ almighty this guy was chugging the look-aid. Absolutely drunk with delusional paranoias and spouting off totally ludicrous conspiracy theories. Shame, really. Trouble taking a fella like this too seriously after a complete blunder of situation awareness shouted aloud to the world over. A tool for the state dept propaganda machine …and he does it free of charge. I refer to this gentlemen as the “midwit. I beliefe some Bolshevik or Russian communist called them useful idiots. Both are applicable .
I hate to do go on continuously lambasting this commenter, but I feel it’s necessary to ruthlessly ridicule this kind of unhinged behavior at every opportunity because it’s too absurd and it’s believers hold too mudh hostage through their shady way of politicking
Since you shelved this as not-to-read, does that mean you didn’t read it? Or do you not read books solely bc someone you don’t like read it?
So any book that Bannon, or folks like him, like, you immediately discount? Pathetic. I assume if Bannon liked All the Sinners Bleed, City on Fire, or 11/22/63, you would also think those books are ones to be avoided? Grow up

"I'm a Leninist. Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that's my goal, too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today's establishment."
What kind of right-winger would ever want to describe themselves as Lenin?
