Great review, Michelle. Love your quotes.
Nice review. My ratings on Theroux's books have steadily increased as I read more of them. It is unclear to me whether this is me adjusting to his style, or whether I enjoy the books more. This one I read fairly early, and rated it 4 stars at that time, and I remember it quite fondly.

I've grown fond of Paul Theroux as a narrator and now always look forward to read about him and his opinions. It's like hearing a friend talk about their travel experience. He doesn't hold back with his observations and that's very refreshing.
I enjoyed reading your review of Riding the Iron Rooster & about your own experiences in China as well. Daren is right about Theroux, though I was an early advocate for his particular style of travel-writing. My sense is that at least some who enjoy reading Rick Steves or Bill Bryson will never adjust to Paul Theroux's books, which are almost a sub-genre of travel tales. Theroux's comment about the Chinese "presence" in Tibet is particularly apt.
