XD The more I re-read Bertie, the more I think this applies to ALL her heroines. :P"
This one was really brutal. The heroine’s nickname Elf, and she was just so angelic, so perfect, she made Skye look like the strumpet she was. :P I read a shit load of Bertrice small books from 1999 to 2002 or so and I just can’t do it anymore. This was one of the last I read by her. I figured it would be a change of pace, the heroine is a virgin and sleeps only with the hero , no kidnapping into a harem or sold into slavery, but tawdry is what Bertie does best so this one was just dull.
The best thing about this one was the villainess. She was gang-banged by three guys (including the villain) and then stops in the middle and says, oh wait we have to practice save medieval sex and preceded to douche with a wine bottle.
The villain started out hardcore, but after he fell in love with the heroine he just turned into a wimp. It was those damned Duillo covers that drew me in every time. This one didn’t even have a painted cover so I don’t know what was my excuse.
Honestly if Bertie just wrote books with the villains and supporting characters, and no heroine I would have loved her stuff.

That villainess... *dies* Her sex-crazed baddies and their wtfery definitely are the best thing about her books. I'm currently mired in plotless perfecty perfeckshun with Blaze and Hubby #1.
I read her stuff mainly from 1988-1996 in JH/HS and college, got bored when non-fic became way more fascinating and didn't really touch her stuff again until 2009. It's been an eye-opener since I'm less patient and way more snarky than I used to be. More fun in its own way, but holy shit, painful as hell. :D
