Thanks Chris. for the complete novice is it worthwhile, or should I look somewhere else. like you I want to know about African peoples, empires, etc. alongside the well k own colonial ones
While I do agree with some of your comments, I'm not sure his book was intended to be a 5000 year history of Africa like you are stating. I believe you are misinterpreting the point of the book. It is clearly about the conquests of Africa as stated in its title and subtitle: "The Fortunes of Africa: A 5000 Year History of Wealth, Greed, and Endeavor." It is about foreign, non-African peoples (a.k.a. Europeans) and their desires to conquer and obtain the wealth of Africa.
I hope I can get the two books you recommended from the library, they are on the expensive side. On the other hand, it might be worth it to own them in order to refer back, take notes and such.
I bought the second one you recommended for $10 as an ebook, unfortunately the first is over $100, that’s too pricey for me unfortunately. I’m still pondering it though, maybe I can find it used. I like to know things.
