Are you talking about the book by Jennifer Donnelly?
I agree that those books are fantastic! JD has a few other books out that I also recommend, especially Revolution. And perhaps check out The Thornbirds.It's a classic and similarly generational.
i've read all of jd's books but i've never heard og the thornbirbs..!
