Your local library might carry the books. If you prefer e-readers, libraries are starting to get more of those added to their collection.
Additionally, most libraries are part of Inter-Library loan systems, which means that even if they don't carry a copy of the book, they can get a copy in from any other library that does have one. If you're not sure if your library has inter-library loan, ask your librarians.
A lot of the ILL systems are starting to get automated to the point where you can check the extended catalogue and place a hold on the book right from your own computer as well, so find out if that's an option when you're asking.
