It's not a book, but, do you know the Greek myth about Philemon and Baucis?
Once upon a time, Zeus and Hermes came down to earth as beggars and asked humans for shelter, and had every door closed in their faces. Except for one, in the humble hut owned by Philemon and Baucis, an old couple who took them in and offered everything they had for their comfort, even when they were very poor. To thank them for they generosity, the gods revealed themselves as such, and rewarded them with a Olympian-like feast, after which they send a flood to punish all those people who denied their homes to them. In contradiction to Zeus himself, who had a lot of lovers, Philemon and Baucis loved each other so deeply, and were so loyal to each other, that even he was ashamed. They had met when they were very young, and had been together eversince. Zeus then turned their humble house into a temple, and installed them as the guardians, promising to fulfill any request they had. And since they were happy and wanted nothing else than being together, they asked to die at the same time, so they wouldn't be separated. And when the time came, they held hands, and as they died they transformed in a tree around the temple Zeus had built from their house, together, for all eternity.
Me too, it would make a great retelling.
