Try The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and its sequel A Closed and Common Orbit, by Becky Chambers. It's light, funny, doesn't have to understand too much about scientific terms.
This is a tricky one because the genre is so broad. Are you looking for something light in tone/subject matter (i.e. with some degree of comedy, no unpleasant events etc.), something light on science/technology detail, or both?
