Hmm I don't know if this is what you're looking for but I really enjoyed Jim Butcher's "The Codex Alera" series and maybe if you're into fantasy as well I could recommend Tad William's "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" trilogy as well!
Mrs. Newmans Mother has a great plot, and the characters are so well thought out. A little campy... Has a witch, great cross dressing, prison escapee with a heart, love triangle, everything.
