How would you define an "indie author"? One who doesn't publish with one of the large publishing houses/companies?
An indie author is someone who's work is not published through large, traditional publishers. An indie author self-publishes through small indie publishing companies and retains 100% of the rights to their work.
"Self-publishes through small indie publishing companies" is slightly contradictory. Most small publishers do the same thing as big publishers - editing, marketing etc. There are companies which facilitate self-publishing, but they're not the norm and are often disparagingly referred to as "vanity presses". In fact, they're often not small either.
TL;DR - As far as I know, indie=/=self-published.
Oh, my apologies. Any author, like myself, who gets their work published by a small (or large) indie publishing company, and does not go through all the red tape (finding an agent, querying traditional publishing companies, etc.) is by definition, an indie author. Also, indie authors have control as to who edits, formats, cover designs, etc., their work. With traditional publishers, you do not have that luxury. Since you already knew so much about what an indie author is, there really was no reason in you asking.
I think we're still using a different definition of "indie". There are, as far as I know, small publishing companies which do all the same things as a large publisher (agents, editors, etc.) but are sometimes referred to as "indie". I've never before heard "indie" used solely to refer to self-published authors and the companies who facilitate self-publication. Hence my question, as I suspected what you meant by "indie" and what I normally take the word to mean were not the same - which turned out to be correct.
Addendum: the confusion may arise because you're referring to companies which facilitate independent authors' self-publication, whereas I thought you were referring to independent (i.e. small) traditional publishing companies.
