Jan-Maat as a child I loved Rosemary Sutcliff - while white she was a wheel chair user in addition to being of the female persuasion, most of her protagonists are admittedly young men or boys with pale skins, Warrior Scarlett might be too obvious for him - bronze age boy with a withered arm finds place in warrior society but might be something to think about
Is E. Nesbit too unmodern for you?
Ursula LeGuin Wizard of Earthsea series

Zanna White boy protagonists written by women pass ;-)

Zanna I've only read books aimed at younger children by Nesbit I think? Maybe a bit on the unmodern side

Zanna Thanks Aubrey, that's a great lead.

Jan-Maat I finally checked out Rosemary Sutcliff - I had heard of The Eagle of the Ninth, but not of its author. Looks interesting and good to vary the mix
