What category of historical fiction? And what are some that he's enjoyed before?
Not sure if it's such a good "boy" book, but the Root Cellar was an awesome historical fiction and perfect for his age. I loved it (back in the day)... also, have you thought of a couple series I have read... Captains and the Kings (Taylor Caldwell - it's been too long, so it may have that romantic storyline you're wanting to avoid)
oh, and John Jakes "The Bastard" is the first book in the "Kent Family Chronicles"... again, I don't recall about the romantic thing, but I sure learned a lot.
