I was about that age when I became interested in both of them (about 10 for WWII and 12 for the Civil War, after seeing and reading Gone with the Wind). I just read whatever we had at home first and then found more books from the library, just browsing the right shelf. I think there was some book in English that I also read some a bit later (obviously English isn't my native language).
