Its hard to buy books for children, which out painstakingly reading ever one to check, however this site http://www.commonsensemedia.org/ is one that rates books and other media for parents to help make informed decisions about the content of books ect. I thought it might help you to check what the books are about.

I started picking and reading books from the adult section in our library when I was about nine, first mysteries (Sherlock Holmes and Christie) and then other genres. I see no reason why (almost) teenagers couldn't read (most of) them.
