You could read The Bell Jar. Given that Sylvia Plath was a Fulbright Scholar and a Pulitzer Prize winner, I imagine the writing will meet your requirement of not poorly written. It is about main character's descent into depression. The main character was not considered schizophrenic, so I'm not sure how strictly you are limiting the scope of your reading.
