I've actually had this one for a while, but haven't read it yet. Is it really scary?
Depends what you mean by "scary". It's very atmospheric, with a lot of brooding tension and mystery. It's not full of "jump scares" (though there are some bits where something unexpectedly horrific happens), so the fear factor comes more from drawn-out, oppressive anticipation and mystery.
Have you read The Troop by Nick Cutter? That's the kind of thing I might be looking for, but I'm definitely going to read this. I can really get into a broody, atmospheric tale.
I haven't read that one, but from the blurb it doesn't sound a million miles away from The Terror - a group of people in the middle of a wilderness, attacked by something inexplicable. In the Terror, though, some of the danger comes from within (mutineers and boneheaded decision-making).
