Each ghost speaks his lines simultaneously with the other, the true ghost saying the opposite of what the false ghost proclaims. When the prince asks “Murder?” it is unclear to which ghost he is responding. Throughout the remainder of the play, as Hamlet vacillates and kills, it is impossible to know which ghost’s command he has heard and is carrying out.”
