“Ralph Winter suggests that a cross-cultural team engaged in spreading the Good News is primarily a mission, not a community. In his defining article on the “two structures” of God’s redemptive purpose, he proposes that the church is a modality: it focuses on the nurture of its members. The missionary band, on the other hand, is a sodality: it exists as a mission. In this explanation, Winter helps us understand that team members should not expect from their team the same extent of nurture that is intended for a church. The team bands together because it is on a God-ordained task: to establish Jesus-centered communities where there are none.253”
